Innovation in Brazilian dairy farming involves the adoption of technologies capable of increasing efficiency, reducing costs and making production systems more resilient.

The assessment was made by José Luiz Bellini Leitte, general manager of Embrapa Gado de Leite, during his participation in the Eloos event, this Monday (1).

According to Bellini, innovation is born on rural properties and has the producer as the main protagonist of the process. He reinforced that the role of research is to provide tools, knowledge and practical solutions that can be applied directly in the field.

"Innovation is made in the field. The producer is the one who makes the innovation; we just instrumentalize this process. Today we have a clear mission to provide services to the producer, with applied research that generates knowledge and practices to solve problems in the field", he said.

The executive highlighted that the rapprochement between research institutions and producers is essential to accelerate the adoption of new technologies, especially in areas such as digitalization, mechanization and real-time monitoring of livestock activities.

"We need to be close to producers to meet demands related to digitalization, mechanization and real-time decision-making in dairy farming", he stated.

Bellini also highlighted that increasing production efficiency is one of the main ways to guarantee the economic sustainability of the activity.

To achieve this, in addition to investments in technology, it will be necessary to increase the qualifications of the workforce and access to capital to modernize properties.

"We need to bring more efficiency and profitability, requiring qualified labor and investment capital for a resilient and economically profitable production system.

These are the big challenges that we take to debate with producers", he explained.

Among the points of greatest attention for the sector is the cost of production, especially expenditure on animal feed, which represents a significant portion of the expenses of dairy farms.

"The production system, if it is not profitable, does not make sense. Reducing production costs is essential.

Animal feeding needs to be used with more productive forage that reduces costs for the producer, which becomes even more challenging given current conditions," he said.

Eloos was created to promote debate between representatives of the private sector, public authorities and experts on strategic topics for economic development.

In previous editions, the project brought together national leaders and executives from large companies to discuss issues related to energy, infrastructure and the country's competitiveness.

How does the producer finance the harvest in Brazil?
