Claude Lemieux's brain will be donated to the Boston University CTE Center's Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) Research Center to help with studies into the long-term effects of repetitive brain injuries, the former athlete's family said on Saturday (1st).

Lemieux died at age 60 on Thursday (29), according to authorities. Days earlier, he had participated as a torchbearer for the Montreal Canadiens before a playoff game.

Throughout his career, the Canadian played almost 1,500 games in the NHL for six teams between 1983 and 2009. Known for his physical style and decisive performances, he won four Stanley Cup titles.

In a statement released by their daughter, Claudia Lemieux Bishop, the family said they authorized the research center to publicly release any discoveries associated with Lemieux's name. However, he stressed that no conclusions should be drawn in advance about a possible diagnosis.

"Claude dedicated his career after leaving the track to helping the next generation," said his family, referring to his work as a sports agent. "By allowing your name to be associated with this research, we hope your life will contribute to greater understanding, more honest conversations, and better protection for athletes and families in the years to come."
