The speed of advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has consolidated an unprecedented scenario in global technological history: the absolute protagonism of private companies to the detriment of government control, according to an assessment by the professor of Intelligence Technology at PUC-SP, Diogo Cortiz.
"For the first time in the history of humanity, such a powerful technology is being guided by economic interests, with private capital", explained Cortiz.
According to him, countries are racing against time to try to participate in the debate and mitigate the risks of this disparity.

The dispute between the USA and China
The expert highlighted that the largest global economies have adopted different approaches to managing artificial intelligence. While Beijing centralized efforts under the control of the State, Washington adopted a more "pulverized" stance.
"China is very different from the United States in this regard. It has an artificial intelligence strategy that was created in 2017 and they recently launched a new project called 'AI Plus', included in the five-year plan, which serves to transform the entire economy. There, the State has a greater role", detailed Cortiz.

On the other hand, the North American model lacks centralization, something that transfers sector leadership to Silicon Valley. "The United States doesn't even have, for example, a central plan for artificial intelligence. This is largely in the hands of companies," he highlighted.
This strong corporate dependence raised alarm bells in federal authorities in Washington. According to Cortiz, the American government has been looking for ways to restore the balance of forces and structure internal control mechanisms, despite facing ideological challenges.
"Recently, they have been working hard to try to strengthen this more of a governance role. Although the Trump administration is a little averse to the word 'regulation,' they are looking for ways of control, ways of better understanding what is happening inside the United States as well," he concluded.
