Students on the Electronics course at the Henrique Lage State Technical School (ETEHL), a unit of the Technical School Support Foundation (Faetec), in Rio de Janeiro, won, this Saturday (30), the award for "Best International Project", at the 2026 National Science Exhibition.

The event, held in the city of Porto, in Portugal, awarded young people João Marcelo and Cauã Da Cal - the only representatives from Brazil at the site - for creating a prototype of a mechanical hospital stretcher that can be activated via voice command, in Niterói (RJ).

In the project, the hospital stretcher uses the Arduino platform and voice recognition modules - such as Alexa - to adjust the inclination and height by voice, facilitating use by quadriplegics and the elderly.

The idea came from the personal experience of one of the students in the group who has a grandmother who was bedridden due to heart disease and reduced mobility.

According to the group, they developed the model of the artifact, which took a year between planning, development, execution and testing, to achieve the desired results.

Emergence of the idea and inspiration
The idea came from the personal experience of student João Marcelo, 18 years old, whose grandmother is bedridden due to heart disease and reduced mobility. During the study group meetings, João launched the idea, which had the full support of electronics professor/advisor Altair Martins.

"The automated stretchers that exist on the market are expensive and require the patient to operate them. Those who cannot move, for example, need another person to activate the controls", said Altair Martins, professor of electronics.

The research process for developing the prototype involved professionals in the field. Altair says that the information from another professor, from the Technical School of Health, was fundamental.

Awards won
Before conquering Europe, the project had already accumulated recognition at important scientific and technological fairs in Brazil. The prototype won 1st place at the fair held by the Regional Council of Industrial Technicians of the State of Rio de Janeiro (CRT-RJ).

The students also secured 1st place at Mostratec, considered one of the main international science and technology exhibitions in Latin America, in the Electronic Engineering category.

In addition, the project came in 2nd place at the Science, Technology and Innovation Fair of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FECTI).

Another important recognition came at Febrace, the Brazilian Science and Engineering Fair, one of the biggest student competitions in the country, where the group won 3rd place.
