Singer Niall Horan, 32, said he felt comforted that his last memory of Liam Payne was marked by a happy moment. The British star met his friend and former One Direction bandmate in Argentina, a few days before the artist's tragic death, in October 2024. Liam passed away at the age of 31, after falling from the balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, an episode that mobilized fans and caused commotion in the pop universe.
In an interview with the Culture section of the Sunday Times newspaper, Niall admitted that he still has difficulty understanding the absence of his former bandmate.
"I'm happy [for the last meeting], because it means that my last memory of him was happy," he said. "It still feels surreal. The first day, I thought, 'No, that didn't happen.'
The performer of "Slow Hands" explained that his grief is crossed by conflicting feelings and that, at the same time as he feels sadness, he finds comfort in the memories he built with Liam.

Astrologer reveals dates in June that will boost passions

If it hasn't happened for you yet, June could give you the push you need..."When I think about Liam's death, there is sadness, but I also end up smiling because of the memories we had. I go places and remember something silly in a hotel or some random situation that makes me laugh."
Niall also recalled moments he lived with One Direction during international tours and mentioned a special place for the band.
"We always had a lot of fun in Australia because we were able to go out and go to the beach. Liam wasn't bad at surfing. I can barely swim," he joked.

The singer also revealed that he remains close to Liam's family and stated that the bond he created over the years remains.
"All our families remain in contact. They also lived these experiences", he explained.
Niall's new album, "Dinner Party", includes a tribute to his former colleague, entitled "End of an Era". The star said he believed Liam would probably have liked the song.
"I think it's his kind of music. Liam liked Coldplay, he loved songs like 'You and I' by One Direction, songs that take you somewhere. It's funny to think about it - now that you mention it - talking about the things he liked," he said.
Although the other members of One Direction have yet to hear the track, Louis Tomlinson has also written his own tribute to Liam, titled "Dark to Light". Niall reported having seen fans' reactions to the song during the singer's concert in Paris last month.
"There's something we share between us, but the fans have also experienced a loss. It's hard. You can't tell someone you didn't know someone if they feel like they did. It's part of the reason people like bands. They connect with different personalities and have their favorites," he concluded.
