Palmeiras suffered, but beat Chapecoense 1-0 in a duel full of tension and controversy this Sunday (31), in the 18th round of Series A of the Brazilian Championship. Paulinho scored the only (validated) goal of the match at Allianz Parque, in São Paulo.

After the match, coach Abel Ferreira commented on Felipe Fernandes de Lima's controversial refereeing and assessed the referee's performance as 'neutral'. The first controversy was Allan's expulsion, 42 minutes into the game:

About Allan's red card: did you see the red for Pedro Rocha? Yesterday, Pedro Rocha hit the shin and he was correct; it's red. Today, whatever it was yellow or red, I was going to accept it. The referee was running to give a yellow card and I'm sure someone whistled in my ear: 'It's red, it's red, it's red, it's red'. I knew they were certainly one of our first players.

In the final minutes, the referee disallowed a goal from Santa Catarina before awarding a penalty - which Bolasie missed in the last minute.

However, in addition, Felipe Fernandes was complicated by the long delay in analyzing the plays, with waiting for the VAR to look at each moment and, then, himself going to the monitor to interpret.

"Six minutes of added time. Why six minutes of extra time? Third point: Murilo's foul. If he was cautioned, you saw the first yellow card. Luiz grabs the shirt, yellow card. You saw the move: Allan passes by the player's left side, which takes him down, and doesn't give a yellow card. The move continued. Why doesn't it give a yellow card afterwards? So, the move continued. If you want an interpretation, there is an interpretation. In fact, the VAR should have intervened if he had called the foul", said Abel.

"The last move, the penalty, is very clear. I don't know if it's inside or outside the area, but the foul is clear. You need to have courage to score that penalty, it's true. And he did. That's what he saw. The VAR also saw it, called him, and he confirmed the penalty for our opponent. The referee, in my opinion, was right on some and wrong on others. As I said, Allan was penalized too much. I think the referee was coming to give a yellow card and ended up compromising. The third: the foul that caused the play. It's a foul, there's a push. In fact, if you remember, this happened several times during the game. If we compare it to the last referee we had here at home, in that game it was worth everything.

"The game should not have existed"
Abel also criticized the decision of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to hold a round of the competition this weekend, when the official preparation period for the World Cup has already begun.

In other countries, especially in European football, tournaments have already been closed or suspended since mid-week.

The complaint is due to absences at Palmeiras: the São Paulo team was left without eight names due to the call-ups. Gustavo Gómez, Ramón Sosa and Mauricio, for Paraguay; Jhon Arias, in Colombia; Flaco López and Giay, in Argentina; Piquerez and Emi Martínez, for Uruguay, were absent against Chapecoense.

"If the clubs and the CBF really wanted to take care of the interests of Brazilian football, this game could not have existed. I have said more than once that it was the only country in the world that authorized the game to be played without many international players. Under normal conditions, this game could never have existed."

Important victory
Isolated leader of the Brazilian Championship, regardless of the result, Palmeiras reached 41 points, seven more than Flamengo, but with one game more.

With the pause in competitions for the World Cup, Alviverde will only play again in July, when they will face Coritiba, in the Brasileirão.
