More than 200 people were injured and one person died in Paris after Paris Saint-Germain's second consecutive Champions League title, the French Interior Ministry said on Sunday (31), reigniting France's debate over street violence.

A day after PSG beat Arsenal in a thrilling penalty shootout in Budapest, consolidating their place on the throne of European football, fans took to the open space of the Champ de Mars, close to the Eiffel Tower, to salute the players who held a victory parade on Sunday afternoon.

But, like last year, the celebrations were partially overshadowed by heavy street violence the night after the game, in which 57 police officers were injured in Paris and more than 400 people were detained, some of them outside the capital, authorities said.

Some storefronts in Paris were destroyed, while rioters also set fire to rental cars and bicycles, police said.

There have been some acts of vandalism against public buildings in provincial cities such as Orleans, said Interior Minister Laurent Nunez.

Police were not specifically targeted in most places, but a police station in central Paris was the site of brief clashes on Saturday night, according to Paris police.

Nunez, former Paris police chief, oversaw a huge security operation involving more than 20,000 officers and said the violence was tackled systematically: "The situation was, in general, under control."

Politicians from the far-right National Reunion party, which is leading in opinion polls ahead of next year's presidential election, took the opportunity to reiterate calls for stronger law and order policies.

"Only in France does the victory of a football club provoke riots," said party leader Marine Le Pen.

But others highlighted deep social divisions as the cause of the repeated violence and riots, saying those who caused the most damage did not represent football fan culture.

"France is living under tension. Society is becoming increasingly brutal. We are a pressure cooker ready to explode at any moment," said Raphael Glucksmann, who is considering running in the presidential elections on a center-left ticket.

Last year, similarly chaotic celebrations following PSG's first Champions League title resulted in two deaths.
