Brazilian doctor creates penile reconstruction technique; understand result

New Brazilian penile reconstruction techniques have met needs that directly help the mental health of cis and transgender men. A study presented at the Congress of the American Urological Association (AUA), in Washington, this month, showed satisfactory results in at least 14 patients who underwent the procedures.

One of the new techniques is applied to cisgender men and is called TCM (Total Mobilization of the Corpora Cavernosa). According to Ubirajara Barroso Jr., urologist at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) and postgraduate professor at the Escola Bahiana de Medicina, the procedure serves people who have lost their penis, whether due to trauma or cancer, and also patients who have a micropenis.

"In conventional techniques, the ligaments that cause the penis to be embedded are released", explains the professional to CNN Brasil. In this type of method, there is a limitation in gaining the organ's extension, as almost half of it is fixed to the bones of the pubic region. "The new technique proposes the release of the entire corpus cavernosum that is fixed to the bone, so that it gains extension", he concludes.

In this specific procedure, recovery is usually quick and without major complications. The patient stays in the hospital for three to four days, does not need to be admitted to the ICU (Intensive Treatment Unit) and, to date, there has never been a need to replace blood during surgeries.

According to the specialist, the patient usually returns home with manageable pain and can walk on the first day after surgery. Physical activity is allowed after one month and sexual intercourse after two to three months.

Metoidioplasty serves trans men
For trans men, the procedure is metoidioplasty, in which the trans man's own genital organ is used, through the hypertrophy of the clitoris, to create the phallus, which can even provide the experience of penetrative sex.

"It depends on the initial size of the organ, but we warn that this type of procedure provides the greatest possible gain compared to other techniques", says the professional.

Functional surgeries
These specific procedures directly help with patients' mental health, as they are only performed in situations where the genital organ is no longer functional.

"Patients go from a condition in which they have no sexual life, embarrassed to undress in front of their partner, to a condition in which it is possible to penetrate. The satisfaction rate is very high", explains Barroso.

The urologist pointed out that at least two of his patients who were victims of traumatic penile amputation returned to an active sexual life after the procedure.

Ubirajara also pointed out that the surgery is not performed on people who just want to increase the size of their penis. If the organ maintains its functionality, the indication to perform the procedure is not accepted.

"It's not cosmetic surgery, it's functional surgery, to treat patients with micropenis, amputated penises or genitalia of trans men", summarizes the doctor.
