Concern about the exposure of personal information and digital security remains strong among Brazilians. According to a survey by NordVPN, 92% of respondents want to be notified if their data is compromised.
The research shows that, even among people who already adopt protective measures, there is still a strong feeling of vulnerability in relation to the use of personal data by websites, applications and digital platforms.
Brazilians remain concerned about online privacy
According to the study, 79% of Brazilians say they regularly review or adjust the privacy settings of the websites and applications they use, which points to more attentive behavior in relation to digital security.

Google employee accused of using internal data and making $1 million from bets
Google logoEPAA Google employee was arrested for allegedly using his access to internal company information to success...Even so, there are signs that some users still have difficulty understanding how this environment works. One in five respondents say they do not understand how their personal data is collected and used by online services and social networks, which helps explain why discomfort with the topic remains present.
Insecurity becomes even more noticeable when it involves financial transactions, as 36% of Brazilians do not feel safe when entering payment information on shopping websites. In other words, concerns about privacy also weigh heavily when consuming online.
The data is part of a survey carried out with a thousand internet users in Brazil, between 18 and 74 years old, from all regions of the country.

Alert about leaks exceeds global average
In international comparison, Brazil appears above the global average in expectations for rapid alerts about security incidents. While 92% of Brazilians want to be notified immediately in the event of a data leak, the average in the 23 markets analyzed was 87%.
Brazil appears alongside markets such as Mexico, Taiwan and Hong Kong, where high concern about data leaks is accompanied by a stronger perception of control over one's own information.
In countries like Sweden, Norway, Japan, Denmark and Poland, the difference between worry and a sense of control is even greater.
Sense of control over personal data is still low
Despite the adoption of protective measures, the feeling of control is still far from complete. Survey data suggests that only 60% of Brazilians feel they control the way their personal data is processed online.
This means that four in ten do not feel fully in charge after this information is shared.
For NordVPN CTO, Marijus Briedis, the data reveals that being aware of the risks does not necessarily mean feeling that you have control over your own data.
"People can understand how their data is being collected and take steps to protect themselves, but still feel like true control is in the hands of platforms, apps and companies," Marijus explains.
In other words, even when the user tries to protect themselves, they may continue to feel that they do not fully decide the fate of their own information after it is shared online.
The truth is that managing privacy requires a series of decisions across different services and platforms. In fact, this process becomes even more difficult when permissions are excessive, configurations are not exactly clear and data collections are difficult to understand.

Expert recommends measures to reduce digital risks
According to the CTO, despite users not being able to control all decisions made by companies regarding their information, it is still possible to reduce unnecessary exposure and hinder misuse.
"Maintaining privacy today requires people to make dozens of small decisions across different services.
If settings are unclear, permissions are excessive, or data collection practices are difficult to understand, even careful users may feel like they have only a partial understanding of how their data is being handled," adds Briedis.
Among the study's recommendations to increase security are reviewing the permissions granted to applications and removing unnecessary access, such as location, contacts, camera, microphone and photos.
To better protect yourself, check out seven tips from Briedis to strengthen your digital privacy:
- Review application permissions and remove access to location, contacts, camera, microphone or photos when not necessary;
- Share as little information as possible when creating accounts, especially in optional fields;
- Use strong and unique passwords and activate multi-factor authentication;
- Regularly check privacy settings on social networks, shopping sites and applications;
- Be careful when entering payment data online, checking the website address and avoiding saving cards on low-cost platforms trustworthy;
- Use cybersecurity tools that block malicious websites, trackers, invasive ads, and dangerous downloads, such as NordVPN;
- Take data leak notifications seriously. If your data is exposed, change affected passwords, enable multi-factor authentication, and monitor suspicious messages or login attempts.
