The federal government signed today the first of four service orders for asphalting and recovery of the so-called "middle section" of BR-319, the highway that connects Manaus (AM) to Porto Velho (RO).

The signing took place at an event this Wednesday (27) in the city of Iranduba, in Amazonas, during the announcement of the federal government's actions for the state, with strong electoral appeal.

According to the Minister of Transport, George Santoro, by the end of June the other three orders will be signed.

The document signed today represents an investment of R$ 381 million for the recovery of the paving of the so-called "C" section, going from the junction between BR-174 and BR-319 to the border between the two states, a distance of 52 kilometers.

The planned investment in the four sections of work is R$ 1.5 billion.

The completion of the asphalt on the highway is a controversy that has been going on for decades. Defenders argued that BR-319 is the only road connection between Manaus and the rest of the country. Critics, on the other hand, fear that asphalting could lead to deforestation and threaten indigenous populations.

Because of the controversy, the government tries to present that the road will be an example of environmental balance.

In addition to asphalting, the government promises to implement an environmental monitoring system along the road, covering an area of 100 thousand km² and the construction of 3 inspection portals on the road.

The project also foresees the exchange of wood for concrete in 52 bridges.

In the city of Humaitá, a multi-agency headquarters will be installed, with representatives from Ibama (Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources), ICMBio (Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation), PRF (Federal Highway Police), Funai (National Foundation of Indigenous Peoples) and PF (Federal Police).

It is expected that the site will also house a Monitoring Center.

After the works are completed, the administration of the highway will be granted to the private sector and the promise is that there will be no toll charges.

Ports

The Minister of Ports and Airports, Tomé Franca, announced during the event at the Juruá shipyard headquarters that the federal government is allocating R$4 billion for the construction of 400 ferries in the Amazon. The amount will be financed with resources from the Merchant Marine Fund and BNDES.

Thomé Franca also announced the allocation of another R$500 million from the Fund for the construction of a batch of 36 vessels. Half will be manufactured in the state and the other half in Santa Catarina.

The minister promised to publish the notice for the construction of the railway between Açailândia and Barcarena by the end of the year.
