Bricklayers killed by police officers in Rio were reportedly mistaken for drug traffickers

The two bricklayers who died after being shot by military police officers this Wednesday morning (27) in São Gonçalo, in the Metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, were reportedly mistaken for drug traffickers in the region, according to witnesses.

The men, identified as Marcelo da Cruz Silva, aged 41, and Edivan Felipe de Assis, aged 46, were shot during a police operation in the Jardim Catarina neighborhood, in a location known as Ipuca.

Relatives of the victims reported that the pair were traveling on a motorcycle towards work on a construction site. One of them was carrying his own lunch box and a piece of wood, and the witnesses suspect that the police mistook the work tool for a firearm.

Protests
After the deaths, family and friends of Marcelo and Edivan organized a demonstration in the region.

According to the PRF (Federal Highway Police), at around 9:20 am, protesters set fire to tires on the banks of km 306 of the BR-101 highway, towards Rio de Janeiro.

The runway was completely closed at around 9:55 am and was partially reopened shortly afterwards. According to the corporation, the section was completely cleared and reopened only at 11:30 am.

Repercussion of the case
After the repercussion, the case began to be monitored by the Commission for the Defense of Human Rights and Citizenship of Alerj (Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro).

The agency classified as inadmissible the fact that workers were killed by State agents while they went out to provide for their families, highlighting that they were only carrying tools and lunchboxes.

State deputy Dani Monteiro (PSOL-RJ), who chairs the commission, expressed solidarity with the victims' relatives and lamented what she called "another police action marked by the death of innocent workers".

The Human Rights Commission also made itself available to families to provide assistance and demand due accountability.

In a statement, the PMERJ (Military Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro) reported that the command of the 7th BPM (São Gonçalo) initiated an investigative procedure to investigate the circumstances of the action. The corporation lamented the deaths of Marcelo and Edivan, stating that it values transparency and fully cooperates with the investigation.

After the shots were fired, the location was isolated by the PM and the DHNSG (Niterói, São Gonçalo and Itaboraí Homicide Police Station) was called to take over the investigation of the case.
