A 27-year-old woman, identified as Bárbara Laura Souza Félix, died this Tuesday afternoon (26) in an aesthetic clinic in the Lourdes neighborhood, south-central region of Belo Horizonte, after undergoing abdominal liposuction with fat grafting on the buttocks.

The main suspicion is that the woman suffered a fat embolism during the procedure, according to information provided by the hospital.

After the patient fell ill, those responsible for the clinic called the PMMG (Military Police of Minas Gerais) who, upon confirming the death, called the expertise of the PCMG (Civil Police of Minas Gerais).

Bárbara Laura's body was sent to the IML (Medico-Legal Institute), where it underwent necropsy examinations to certify the cause of death. According to PCMG, an investigation to investigate the case has been opened.

"The Civil Police of Minas Gerais informs that an official forensic team was at the scene of the events, to collect traces and information that will support the investigations. Other information may be passed on to the press after the judicial police procedures", it informed in a note.

The IMO Hospital, where the procedure was carried out, also commented in a statement.

See the full statement:
"IMO Hospital expresses its deepest regret for the death of the patient following a surgical procedure. At this time of immense pain, our priority is to offer welcome, respect and all the necessary support to the family.

From the outset, the hospital has maintained an attitude of transparency, promptly providing the family with psychological support and the requested documentation, including preoperative exams, care records and duly signed consent forms. All pre-operative, intra-operative and care protocols were strictly observed by the team involved and all resources necessary for emergency care were present and properly used.

The preliminary assessment by the hospital's Death Committee raised the hypothesis of fat embolism, a serious complication described in the medical literature, which can occur in procedures that involve manipulation and grafting of adipose tissue, such as liposculpture. This is a condition that, although uncommon, is recognized as an inherent risk in this type of surgery, even provided for in the informed consent form signed by the patient.

In simple terms, fat embolism can occur when small particles of fat reach the bloodstream and compromise pulmonary circulation, impairing the body's oxygenation. In some cases, its evolution can be sudden, serious and irreversible, even with the adoption of appropriate preventive and assistance measures.

It is important to highlight, however, that so far this is a preliminary diagnostic hypothesis, still dependent on confirmation by the official report from the Forensic Medical Institute.

IMO Hospital deeply regrets the loss of life and sympathizes with the patient's family and friends. It also reinforces your confidence in the seriousness, competence and ethical commitment of the professionals involved, including Dr. Pablo Meneghetti, who has been renting operating rooms at the hospital for over 15 years, is a full member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, is a reference in body aesthetics, and has full competence and technical qualifications to carry out the procedure, being recognized for his high technical standard, zeal and dedication to his patients.

At this time, the hospital understands that the family's pain must be treated with maximum respect, serenity and responsibility, avoiding hasty conclusions before the conclusion of official investigations."
