President Volodymyr Zelensky sent a letter to United States President Donald Trump and the American Congress warning of a serious shortage of air defense missiles in Ukraine, a Ukrainian government communications advisor said. The appeal comes amid threats from Russia to intensify attacks on the country.
In the letter, Zelensky stated that the current pace of missile deliveries through the PURL program "is no longer keeping pace" with Russian attacks.
The Ukrainian president also mentioned the recent Russian attack on Ukraine, which included the launch of two low-intensity ballistic missiles of the Oreshnik type.
According to Zelensky, Ukraine depends "almost exclusively" on the United States to intercept Russian ballistic missiles.
Currently, the only equipment capable of carrying out this type of interception used by the country are the American interceptors of the Patriot air defense system.
The information was released by the news agency Reuters.

Massive attack against Kiev
Russia launched dozens of drones and missiles against Ukraine over the weekend, causing the death of four people, leaving dozens injured and causing damage throughout the Ukrainian capital.
Among the weapons used, Russia employed an Oreshnik hypersonic missile, which, according to Moscow, can travel at ten times the speed of sound and has the capacity to carry nuclear warheads (read more below).
The offensive took place days after Moscow accused Kiev of attacking a vocational school in the Ukrainian region of Luhansk, occupied by Russia, causing the death of 21 people. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his army to respond to this attack.

Russia had already asked foreign citizens and diplomats to leave Kiev earlier this month, when it threatened to launch massive attacks on the city center if Ukraine disrupted a military parade in Red Square.
Damage was recorded at 40 locations in several districts of the capital, including residential buildings, the head of Kiev's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said in a Telegram post.
A school building was damaged in an attack while people were sheltering there, Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said. Local authorities reported that supermarkets and warehouses across the city were also damaged.
"It was a terrible night, and there has never been anything like it in the entire war," said Kiev resident Svitlana Onofryichuk, 55, who has worked at the stricken market for 22 years.
In the Shevchenko district, a five-story residential building was hit, causing a fire, and one person died, the state emergency service said. Ukraine.
Oreshnik Missile
This is the third time that the missile, capable of carrying nuclear or conventional warheads, has been used in Ukraine. Russia hit the town of Bila Tserkva in the Kiev region with the missile, Zelensky said. The target was not immediately clear.
Russia first used the Oreshnik, equipped with multiple warheads, against the Ukrainian city of Dnipro in November 2024.

The missile was used a second time in January in the western region of Lviv.
President Vladimir Putin said the Oreshnik, which means "hazel" in Russian, travels at 10 times the speed of sound, or Mach 10, and is capable of destroying underground bunkers "three, four or more floors down."
The weapon travels "like a meteorite" and is immune to any missile defense system, Putin said, adding that several such missiles, even equipped with conventional warheads, they could be as devastating as a nuclear attack.
