Google opens engineering center at USP; get to know the space

Google opened this Wednesday (27) its second AI engineering center in Brazil. The space is in São Paulo, within the Technological Research Institute (IPT), at USP.
Announced in February 2024, the new location will have the capacity to accommodate up to 400 employees. Among the areas of action are projects linked to artificial intelligence and internet security. The center will also focus on partnerships with startups focused on AI.
Google states that the teams will work on developing solutions to expand user protection in services such as Gmail and Search.
The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), the Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation of the State of São Paulo, Vahan Agopyan, and the president of Google in Brazil, Fábio Coelho, participated in the inauguration.

At the inauguration ceremony, Fábio Coelho stated that technologies developed at the new center could be used throughout the world in the future. According to him, Brazil has many qualified professionals in technology, but there is still a lack of spaces for these people to develop their skills.
"The engineering team present at the Belo Horizonte headquarters is a global reference for Google, and innovations created here today impact billions of users every day. I am excited about the expansion of our engineering to São Paulo and the next chapter in Google's history in this new space", said Fábio Coelho.
The building, which is over 100 years old, was restored by Google, but will continue to belong to USP. Big tech will be responsible for conserving the space, explained Anderson Ribeiro Correia, CEO of IPT. According to him, the company also restored other buildings within the institute.
Although the space is mainly focused on Google operations and activities linked to the university, the building also has a cafeteria open to the public.
The first big tech center in Brazil was opened in 2016 in Belo Horizonte, being the first in Latin America. According to the company, those at the locations will work together.
