The II Jury Court of Rio de Janeiro resumes, at 11 am this Wednesday (27), the trial of former councilor Jairo Souza Santos Júnior, Dr. Jairinho, and Monique Medeiros.

The defendants are accused of the death of four-year-old boy Henry Borel, which occurred in March 2021.

The previous session was suspended at around 2 am, after more than 16 hours of duration, marked by testimonies from the delegates who conducted the investigation.

Testimonies from delegates mark the 2nd day
The plenary instruction phase of the second day focused on hearings from prosecution witnesses. The first to testify was delegate Henrique Damasceno, head of the 16th DP (Barra da Tijuca) at the time of the crime.

For around six hours, Damasceno detailed that the investigation concluded that the child's death was not a domestic accident, but rather the result of violent attacks.

The delegate highlighted that messages recovered from Henry's nanny's cell phone revealed that Monique Medeiros had been warned about previous attacks committed by Jairinho.

In addition, the expertise of the Medical-Legal Institute (IML) identified 23 injuries on the boy's body, with the cause of death indicated as internal bleeding and liver laceration due to blunt force.

Delegate Ana Carolina Medeiros was also interviewed before work was suspended in the early hours of the morning.

Accusations and procedure of the Jury Court
Dr. Jairinho is charged with triple homicide, torture, coercion during the process and procedural fraud. Monique Medeiros is on trial for qualified homicide (by omission), torture, ideological falsehood and procedural fraud.

According to the Public Ministry, Jairinho caused the fatal injuries, while Monique remained silent in the face of the attacks to protect her relationship with the then councilor.

The fate of the defendants will be decided by the Sentencing Council, made up of seven jurors.

The trial, presided over by judge Elizabeth Machado Louro, is expected to last between seven and ten days due to the complexity of the case and the number of witnesses called by defense and prosecution.
