The Foreign Relations and National Defense Committee of the Chamber of Deputies should hear, this Wednesday (27), the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Wellington César Lima e Silva, about the arrest of former federal deputy Alexandre Ramagem in the United States. The session is scheduled to start at 9am.

Wellington César was summoned by the collegiate to explain the international cooperation surrounding Ramagem's arrest, as well as the expulsion of delegate Marcelo Ivo de Carvalho - involved in the arrest of the former parliamentarian - from the United States at the end of April.

As summoned, the minister is obliged to attend the committee meeting.

Understand the Ramagem case
Ramagem was arrested on April 16 for having an expired visa, after being caught committing a traffic violation in Orlando, Florida. At the time, the PF (Federal Police) released a note stating that the measure was the result of cooperation between Brazil and the United States.

Sentenced to 16 years for the coup plot, the former deputy was released two days later. The former head of Abin (Brazilian Intelligence Agency) in the Bolsonaro government has requested political asylum on the grounds of suffering political persecution.

After Ramagem left prison, the United States ordered the departure of PF delegate Marcelo Ivo Carvalho, who acted as a liaison officer with ICE in Miami, on the grounds that he had acted irregularly in the detention of the former deputy.

"No foreigner can manipulate our immigration system to circumvent formal extradition requests and extend political persecution into United States territory. Today, we ask that the Brazilian official in question leave the country for attempting to do so," the Office for Western Hemisphere Affairs, linked to the State Department, posted on social media.

In reaction, the Lula government adopted reciprocity and also demanded the departure of American agent Michael William Myers, who had been in Brazil since 2024 and acted as Carvalho's counterpart in the immigration area.
