The student strike at USP (University of São Paulo) has been going on for more than a month and, on Monday afternoon (25), it was the teachers' turn to join the students.

Adusp (USP Teachers' Association) decided to begin the strike immediately. A new assembly was called for next Monday (1st).

The teachers' demand is for a salary adjustment based on the IPCA of more than 3%, a measure proposed by Cruesp (Council of Rectors of São Paulo State Universities), an increase in the value of the PAPFE (Support Program for Student Permanence and Training), reorganization of the academic semester and the non-punishment of students involved in the demonstrations.

They also ask for an investigation into the responsibilities during the PM's action in vacating the university rectory at the beginning of the month, which is under the command of Aluísio Segurado. Security forces used bombs and tear gas to remove students from the scene.

The DCE (Central Student Directory), which is leading the strike, says that the rectory is intransigent with some of the demands.

Student strike
At the beginning of April, USP students joined the university's technical and administrative staff.

They demanded equality in relation to bonuses given by the University only to the teaching staff.

This strike ended at the end of the month after an agreement between the rectory and Sintusp (USP Workers Union).

Meanwhile, the students continued their strike. They protest against cuts to the scholarship program, lack of student housing spaces, cuts in water supply and improvements to the student restaurant.

USP proposed an adjustment based on the IPC-FIPE index. In this way, the full aid would rise to R$912 per month, while the partial aid for students with housing would rise to R$340.

The proposal, however, is considered insufficient by students, who defend an adjustment to R$1,804, an amount equivalent to the minimum wage in São Paulo.

"Currently there are no classes in most buildings, but the boards, guided by the rectory, continue to put pressure on students, threatening freshmen with retirement if they do not return to classes", says Dany Oliveira, one of the DCE representatives, to CNN Brasil.

When contacted by CNN Brasil through its press office, USP stated that it "does not have a position note per hour" and that it will maintain contact if any changes occur.

Currently, PAPFE beneficiaries receive R$335 for student housing and R$885 for full aid. The proposal is to increase these values to R$340 and R$1,804, respectively.

In addition, the protesters request improvements in the services provided, such as the management of the university restaurant, which had several episodes of bugs and larvae in the food, student housing and the situation at the HU (University Hospital), which, according to protesters, has lost around 30% of its staff in the last decade.

USP also extended the deadlines for current projects and the term now runs until February 28, 2027. The value of the PUB scholarship is R$745 per month and that of the PAPFE varies from R$335 (partial with housing) to R$885 (full).

Negotiations are not progressing
The DCE said it was awaiting a return from the USP rectory after a mediation table on Monday (26) about the PAPFE and budget study. Dany Oliveira stated that, in the last two negotiations, the university did not propose changes.

"We fight for the right to study and for decent conditions of permanence so that we can continue building a cutting-edge university. We are not kidding. We are convinced of the need to extract more achievements from a rectory that, until now, has been cynical to the demands.

The students are willing to go all the way", says the DCE in a statement posted on social media.
