Brazilian diplomats see an attempt at politicization in Flávio Bolsonaro's (PL) complaint about the Brazilian Embassy in Washington D.C., capital of the United States, this Tuesday (26).

The senator and presidential candidate complained that the diplomatic representation did not provide space for him to hold a press conference after visiting American President Donald Trump at the White House.

According to Flávio's advisors, two emails were sent and "some calls" were made to Itamaraty. One of the advisors stated that one of the emails was sent around 6pm this Monday (25th).

However, for members of Itamaraty, Flávio and his team did not follow the necessary procedure when requesting the space. For diplomats, the request for support - which is provided in the case of official missions - was made at the last minute and without the necessary standard processing, without going through the Itamaraty parliamentary advisory service in Brasília.

For diplomats, the request cannot be an email made the day before along the lines of "I'll come by your house". Furthermore, they assess that Flávio's allies were already demonstrating an attempt at what they consider to be a politicization of the case.

According to diplomatic sources, visits by parliamentarians are normally made official with Congress, in coordination with the parliamentary office in Brasília, which then requests support from the embassy.

Collections of parliamentarians have taken place in the past, senators have diplomatic passports and parliamentarians often ask for support, says a diplomat. But, when the request for the press conference came, as there was no communication from Congress, the embassy spent the day running around, together with Brasília, to better understand the elements of the trip - and whether it had an official nature or not. Official character is not something that can be "self-declaratory", the caller said.

And as the press conference involves public expenditure, as the embassy would have to hire a translator and sound equipment, for example, and there is a specific parliamentary line for this, in addition to the need for supporting documents, the request should have been officially communicated, government sources argue.

For this reason, Itamaraty finally sent a response saying that the request could not be fulfilled in time because there was not enough information to prove the official nature of the visit.

Diplomats recalled that a group of parliamentarians, including those from the opposition, received support from the embassy last year when they went to the United States to try to reverse the tariff. At the time, an official communication was made from the Senate to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asking for support for the official mission, they argue, a few days in advance for preparations.

In a note released on Tuesday night, Flávio's team accuses the embassy of filtering the use of space "selectively to meet ideological conveniences".

"As Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, an elected parliamentarian and one of the country's main political leaders, meets with the most powerful man in the world, it is surprising that the embassy does not accept a simple request to provide space for press service", states an excerpt from the note.

"The question that remains is: since when did Brazilian diplomacy start to act as a partisan extension of the PT? In a true democracy, institutions must serve Brazil, and not a political group", adds another
