Santos entered the field under pressure, and managed to secure themselves in the Copa Sudamericana playoffs this Tuesday (26), after beating Deportivo Cuenca 3-0 at Vila Belmiro. The game was valid for the sixth round of the group stage.

Gabigol, Miguelito and Gabriel Bontempo scored for the black and white team, who now need to wait for the end of the Sudamericana and Libertadores group stages to discover their future, tomorrow night (27). According to the regulations, the second placed team in the group faces those eliminated in 3rd place from the other Conmebol tournament, and everything depends on the campaigns in the first phase.

The campaign disappointed. In six games, Peixe drew four, lost one and won just one, and managed to qualify on goal difference over San Lorenzo. Deportivo Cuenca is eliminated, and Deportivo Recoleta goes straight to the round of 16 in first place.

Electrifying start
The start of the first half was full of excitement for Santos fans. In less than two minutes, Peixe missed a clear chance and gave up another to Cuenca. Miguelito took off on the left, and Bontempo had the rest. In the end, he sent it out.

In the next move, a very bad performance from the Brazilian team. Gabigol made a mistake in the defense and Ordoñez came out in front of the goal and hit the ball wide. Peixe was superior and was putting pressure on the opponent when VAR called referee Ospina to evaluate a possible penalty from Piedra. The referee understood that the defender had touched the ball with his shoulder, and not with his arm, to the Santos players' complaint.

Gabigol scores
Without the penalty scored, Gabigol decided. Bontempo attacked Igor Vinícius on the right side, and the full-back went to the baseline to serve Gabigol in the middle of the area. The player appeared in good condition close to the goalkeeper to push the ball into the back of the net.

Game gets warm
Unlike the first minutes, Santos dropped in production at the end of the first half, and ran the risk of conceding a draw following a good play by Erique. The full-back invaded the area with freedom and hit the goal, but ended up missing the target. At that point, the 1-0 victory still eliminated Peixe from the competition, as Recoleta beat San Lorenzo in the other group game.

Miguelito and Bontempo seal result
The goal that could give Santos a place in the playoffs came from Miguelito's feet, following a mistake by goalkeeper Ferrero. The play started with a wrong ball from the Ecuadorian team's defense. The ball fell to Gabigol's feet. The center forward opened for Barreal and he crossed to Miguelito, who hit it with power. The goalkeeper accepted the shot as it came, and Peixe reached 2-0.

After two arrivals from Cuenca, another Menino da Vila appeared to classify Santos. At 10 minutes, Gabriel Bontempo crossed with Gabigol and received the ball in the area, at speed. The movement was perfect for the covering touch in one of Peixe's most beautiful goals of the year. With the score, the team jumped to second place in the group, the playoff classification area.

Santos scored the fourth goal following a mistake by goalkeeper Ferreiro, who made a mistake in exchanging passes with the defense. Luckily for the Ecuadorian team, the play was canceled for offside.

Penalty in the last play
When the lights went out, the referee saw a foul by Moisés on Chacón inside the area and awarded the penalty after review by VAR. Leguizamón charges into the right corner of goalkeeper Brazão, who manages to make the save and send the ball out.

What is Santos' situation in the Copa Sudamericana?
Santos finishes the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana in second place in Group D, with seven points. Deportivo Recoleta is the leader, with eight.

The Brazilian team will face in the South American playoffs one of those eliminated in 3rd place in the Libertadores groups - until now, only Estudiantes, Nacional-URU and Lanús had already been defined. The final classification only comes out at the end of the round of both competitions, this Thursday (27).
