The Rio de Janeiro Court confirmed, this Tuesday (26), the end of the use of cash to pay for tickets on buses on the municipal network in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

According to the document from the 2nd Public Finance Court of the District of the Capital, the decision of the City of Rio does not violate article 22 of the Consumer Protection Code (CDC) which determines that public bodies, concessionary companies or permission holders are obliged to provide adequate, efficient, safe and, in the case of essential, continuous services.

The court decision rejects Procon-RJ's injunction request, which attempted to invalidate the replacement of money by digital means on the city's buses.

"I do not see any impact on the community, already accustomed to using digital means for the most diverse services, even for the most needy people, and it is worth noting that the BRT and VLT no longer accept payment in cash, which brings speed and convenience to users of these means of transport", said the document.

Payment for municipal buses
Rio City Hall began, this Tuesday (26), the circulation of municipal buses with the new payment model implemented. The system, which is in the testing phase, now accepts payments via Pix and debit and credit cards, integrated with Jaé validators.

The change also affects payments in cash, which will no longer be accepted on municipal transport from May 30th.

According to the municipal administration, payment via Pix will also be implemented in stages on Jaé's direct validators.

For the city hall, the new model is part of a project to modernize municipal ticketing and increase security within collectives.

In addition, it seeks to bring agility to passenger boarding, an end to the dual role of drivers and increased transparency regarding fare collection and the use of public subsidies.

Use of cash and tariff integration
According to the municipal administration, cash will continue to be accepted for purchasing and recharging Jaé cards.

Currently, the system has more than a thousand physical charging points, among 750 accredited establishments, 250 self-service machines installed in BRT, VLT, subway and airport stations, in addition to 90 BRT ticket offices.

With the new expansion of the network, the City Hall's forecast is that Rio will have around 2 thousand physical points for purchasing and recharging the Jaé card.

From this Tuesday (26th), the single green card, valid for just one trip, will gradually begin to be sold in more than 700 newsstands throughout Rio de Janeiro. The card will cost R$10, with R$5 referring to the value of the card and R$5 for the fee.

After use, the passenger will be able to top up again or request a refund of the card value.

The City Hall also informed that, from May 30th, only the Jaé black card, linked to the user's CPF, and the system application will allow access to the fare integrations of the Bilhete Único Carioca and the Bilhete Único Metropolitano. The green card will no longer offer the benefit.

Today, the Bilhete Único Carioca allows passengers to make up to three trips within a three-hour period, one of which must be on the BRT, with payment of a single fare of R$5.

The Metropolitan Single Ticket allows up to four integrated trips between BRT, VLT and municipal buses in up to 20 hours, also with an integrated fare of R$5.
