The dispute between Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, Mercedes drivers, was the highlight of the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix. At one point on lap 30, both cars touched tires, and the Italian had to go off the track.

In an interview with SKY Sports, Toto Wolff, CEO and team leader of the German team, assessed the dispute for positions between the drivers and stated that, if the fight for position put the team's scoring chances at risk, he would reconsider the freedom of dispute.

"It's always easy in the end to say, 'Well, that was great for the team and great for the sport, didn't we all enjoy watching the contest?' This is true to a certain extent, but there is another side that we need to consider: there were some moments when the match was close", he began.

"It's important to analyze the race and discuss with the drivers whether they felt it was a little too close and, if that's the case, how can we avoid those very, very difficult situations where we feel it was a little too tight. As much as we seem very sporty in Canada by allowing this, there may be a situation where we may have to reconsider," said Toto.

Favorable to the dispute
Moving on, Wolff was in favor of the dispute for position between the drivers on the track. The manager also spoke about Antonelli and Russell's reactions in conversations with the team over the radio during the race.

"Showing your heart on the track is right. Concentrating on driving is important. But other than that, I think they behaved like racing drivers competing for a championship, so I don't see any flaws in that", assessed the "boss".

"More than ever, this fight is declared. There is a lot at stake for both sides. As a team, however uncomfortable the journey may be at times, you need to accept that this is the fight you were trained for," he added.

Finally, Toto highlighted that, even in favor of fighting for positions, he would implement team rules to avoid a collision between the two.

"But, equally, if there was a situation where we believed the team's points were at risk of being lost, or if we were losing a lot of time to our competitors behind, we wouldn't hesitate a millimeter in applying the handbrake," he revealed.

Mercedes in the Constructors' World Championship

On the one hand, Kimi Antonelli, championship leader with 131 points, won four of the five Grands Prix of the season. Russell, who triumphed in the first stage of the year, is second in the Drivers' World Championship, with 88.
