The Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, was in Buenos Aires, where he met with authorities from Javier Milei's government this Tuesday (26). After the meeting, Múcio defended the rapprochement between Brazil and Argentina and defended that the bilateral relationship be preserved from political differences and electoral processes.

"We need to better exercise our neighborhood, our friendship. In the past we were closer, we were more partners. We need to be immune to electoral and political episodes. Because Argentina's forces are for any government and are forever. Commander changes, those under command remain", said Múcio.

According to correspondent Luciana Taddeo, on CNN 360°, Múcio met with the Minister of Defense of Argentina, Carlos Alberto Presti. According to him, the main objective of the visit was not to offer weapons or equipment to the Argentine government - contrary to what had initially been communicated by the Brazilian Ministry of Defense.

Múcio stated that he came motivated by the need for greater unity between the Armed Forces of South America, highlighting that the entire world is arming itself and investing in defense, which would make cooperation between countries in the region even more urgent to protect their territories, sovereignty and natural wealth.

Also during the visit, a catalog of the Brazilian national defense industry was delivered to the Argentine government. Múcio, however, stressed that this gesture did not represent the central purpose of the meeting.

He also proposed holding an event bringing together Brazilian and Argentine businesspeople from the defense sector, an initiative that, according to him, was well received by the Argentine side.

Bilateral relationship at low frequency
Múcio's visit is considered one of the few bilateral meetings of ministers between the two governments since Milei came to power. Previously, only Fernando Haddad and Mauro Vieira had held bilateral meetings with their Argentine counterparts during this period, in a context of a clear reduction in the flow of visits between the two countries, which historically maintained a very close relationship.

When asked about the Argentine government's rapprochement with Donald Trump's government - including purchases of North American military equipment, such as armored vehicles and F-16 fighters -, Múcio stated that each country has the right to seek what it considers best for itself, and that this does not represent an obstacle to dialogue.

He also highlighted that it is necessary for countries to talk to identify common points and possibilities for cooperation in the defense industry.

Immunity to political differences
In a statement after the meeting, Múcio was emphatic in defending that the relationship between Brazil and Argentina must transcend the ideological differences between the two governments.

Múcio also highlighted the importance of cooperation in combating organized crime. "Brazil borders 10 countries in South America. We need to be partners, because organized crime has no homeland," he declared.

In addition, he announced planned visits to other countries in the region and mentioned the Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas, scheduled for July in Peru, as an opportunity for countries to present their ideas and strengthen collective dialogue.
