The digital horror (creepypasta) concept "Backrooms" saw a spike in searches in Brazil with the release of the new horror film of the same name. The data was collected by CNN with the help of the Google Trends tool. "Backrooms: A Non-Place" opens Thursday (28) in theaters.

The peak of Google searches occurred on March 31 of this year, the date on which the first trailer for "Backrooms" was released. The term grew again on May 23, five days before the big screen debut.

The value of 100 present in the search graph represents the highest peak in popularity of a term. A value of 50 means half the popularity and a score of 0 means there was not enough data about the term.

In the production, Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Clark, owner of a furniture store on the verge of bankruptcy. Between the doldrums and the slow collapse of a life marked by a failed marriage and an abandoned dream of being an architect, he seeks support in sessions with Dr. Mary Kline (Renate Reinsve), a psychologist who, while trying to help her patients find meaning, faces her own unresolved traumas.

When everything seems to be at its limit, Clark discovers in the store's basement a portal to a maze of endless rooms, with the familiar appearance of ordinary offices, but of impossible proportions. Fascinated and disturbed, he convinces his employee Kat (Lukita Maxwell) and her boyfriend Bobby (Finn Bennett) to help him map this surreal architectural space, where unexplained noises suggest something sinister may be lurking.

What are "Backrooms"?
Backrooms (meaning "back rooms") is an urban legend and digital horror concept (creepypasta) that describes a parallel dimension or gap in reality. The central idea is that a person can, by accident, "cross over" our reality and become trapped in an infinite maze of empty and scary rooms.

In the look, as in the film, there is an emphasis on yellowed walls, damp and moldy carpets and a ceiling with fluorescent lights. It is characterized by an area that stretches for endless kilometers, causing a feeling of despair and loss of sense of time.

Over time, the internet community expanded this universe, creating its own "mythology" with hundreds of additional levels. On deeper levels, the stories say that there are dangerous creatures and anomalies that stalk those who get lost there.

The film is classified as liminal horror, a subgenre of psychological horror focused on "liminal spaces": places of transition (corridors, lobbies, staircases), which are normally busy, but which are empty.
