Israel carries out attack on head of Hamas' armed wing, says Netanyahu

Israel claimed this Tuesday (26) to have attacked the new head of the armed wing of Hamas, who, according to the country, was appointed just days after the death of his predecessor in Israeli attacks. The attack intensifies military pressure on Gaza and expands ground operations in Lebanon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that armed forces attacked Mohammad Odeh, whom he described as the new head of Hamas' armed wing in Gaza.

He did not provide further details. Netanyahu has not said whether Israel believes Odeh was killed.

The prime minister said Odeh headed Hamas's intelligence division at the time of the October 7, 2023 cross-border attack on Israel and was appointed about a week ago to replace Izz al-Din al-Haddad, the group's top armed commander, killed by Israel on May 15.

Sources close to Hamas did not confirm Odeh's appointment as the new military chief, but agreed that he was seen as a possible successor to Haddad, as head of the group's military intelligence and possibly the last living member of the armed wing's top leadership council.

Hours before the attack, Israel announced the expansion of its ground operations in Lebanon. Israel is intensifying its military activities on multiple fronts.

Gaza health authorities said two people, including a woman, were killed and more than 20 were injured in the Israeli attack that destroyed an upper floor of an apartment building in the Rimal neighborhood of Gaza City.

Rescue teams were still on site looking for more possible victims.

There was no immediate comment from Hamas.
