Singer Lauryn Hill turns 51 this Tuesday (26). Owner of an unmistakable timbre, she began her career in the group The Fugees, marking the hip-hop scene. Born in New Jersey, the singer dedicated herself to the arts since childhood and even attended Columbia University before joining the musical group.

Throughout his career, Hill released only one solo studio album, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill", in 1998, which received five awards at the 41st edition of the Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. Despite being unique, the album was voted the best album of all time, with songs such as "Doo Wop (That Thing)" and "Ex-Factor", Hip-Hop and R&B classics. The production sold more than 420 thousand copies in the first week alone, and the artist became the first female rapper to debut at number 1 on the Billboard 200.

Hill has five children with Rohan Marley, son of reggae legend Bob Marley. They lived together from 1996 to 2009, although they never officially married. After her great success in the 1990s, the artist retreated from the spotlight due to her skepticism towards the music industry.

Her distrust of the industry began after she was named in a 1998 lawsuit by four musicians from the group New Ark, who demanded songwriting and production credits on her solo album, reaching an out-of-court settlement only in 2001.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine's "500 Greatest Albums" podcast, the singer declared that she had suffered from saboteurs and pressure for new releases. "People included me in their own narratives about their successes in relation to my album, and if that contradicted my experience, I was considered an enemy," he said.

In 2013, Lauryn Hill was sentenced to three months in prison for tax evasion on income earned between 2005 and 2007. After serving her sentence in Danbury, Connecticut, she was under house arrest for three months and on probation for a year, according to CNN.

Currently, the singer remains active and performing at festivals around the world. But, despite requests from fans, he never released another album of his own. Alongside Wyclef Jean, the singer will headline Global Citizen Live: Rio de Janeiro. The artists come together in a performance that celebrates the 30th anniversary of the album "The Score", an album that is considered a landmark in hip-hop culture, combining the genre with other musical styles. YG Marley and Zion Marley will also be present, who will make a special appearance.
