The Banco de Brasília (BRB) has become the target of growing concern among governors and mayors due to the high volume of judicial deposits held by the institution.

According to Economy analyst Fernando Nakagawa, on Backstage CNN this Wednesday (26), the bank has always been a traditional destination for this type of resource, but the significant increase recorded in recent months caught the attention of the National Council of Justice (CNJ).

"Judicial deposit is when there is a dispute in the Public Power Court with a company or person, the deposits are made in a bank, normally public, under the eyes of the Court, since it is money that is being disputed", explained Nakagawa.

The receiving bank can use these resources while awaiting the court decision, being obliged to return them when the judgment is reached.

The numbers reveal the scale of the problem. In June 2025, the last officially released data, BRB recorded R$19 billion in judicial deposits. "According to the CNJ, this value would already be R$30 billion", stated the analyst.

For comparison purposes, Nakagawa highlighted that Caixa Econômica Federal currently has R$150 billion in judicial deposits, while Banco do Brasil holds almost R$300 billion, although both institutions are significantly larger than BRB.

"This money stays at BRB, it's very cheap money for the bank to capture, almost zero cost, it's money that stays there and the bank can allocate it wherever it sees fit. When the courts decide, the bank needs to return this money", he detailed.

In view of the sudden increase, the CNJ called on the courts of justice in five states (Distrito Federal, Bahia, Maranhão, Alagoas and Paraíba) to explain the growth in volumes deposited at Banco de Brasília.

The main fear, according to Nakagawa, is that, if BRB faces liquidity problems, courts, states and municipalities linked to ongoing processes may have difficulty accessing the amounts, even in the case of a favorable court decision.
