AL MPE asks the governor and Renan Calheiros not to make Pix to voters

The Public Electoral Ministry of Alagoas issued this Tuesday (26) a recommendation to the state governor, Paulo Dantas (MDB), and senator Renan Calheiros (MDB) not to "distribute or promise gifts, basic food baskets, transfers via Pix or any other goods and advantages to voters".

The text was issued by regional electoral prosecutor Marcial Duarte Coêlho and points out that the continuity of practices may constitute abuse of political and economic power in the electoral context.

In addition to politicians, the opinion was also sent to the State Attorney General's Office, as well as to the TRE-AL (Regional Electoral Court of Alagoas).

The prosecutor's recommendation was made after the presence of Dantas and Calheiros at a Mother's Day event on the 10th, held in the municipality of Rio Largo - the third largest city in the state.

In a moment that went viral on social media, alongside Mayor Pedro Carlos (PP), Dantas announced 50 Pix transfers of R$200 to participants, as a gift from him and Calheiros.

"You will also receive a gift from Senator Renan and Governor Paulo Dantas. Who likes Pix there? Raise your hand. What I want is for a lot of people to be honored, a lot of people to be considered. So, we are going to distribute to you 50 Pix of R$ 200", he said at the time.

In addition to Dantas' gifts, the city of Rio Largo also raffled off more than 170 items that ranged from household appliances, furniture and even a motorcycle. Mayor Pedro Carlos shared moments of the event and the delivery of the objects on his social network.

The recommendation is that episodes of this type should not be repeated, especially in the presence of "authorities identified as possible pre-candidates" - such as the case of Calheiros, who is expected to run again for the Senate this year.

The text also advises against the use of public goods for the benefit of candidacies, parties or coalitions, as well as the promotional use of "social programs funded by public authorities".

"The Public Electoral Ministry acts in a preventive manner to guarantee the fairness of the electoral process, protecting the freedom to vote and equal opportunities between candidates. Conduct that may characterize abuse of political or economic power must be prohibited, regardless of the period in which they occur", stated the prosecutor.

Pre-AL (Regional Electoral Attorney's Office in Alagoas) also warned politicians that any failure to comply with the recommendation could result in legal-electoral consequences, such as the filing of representations and an Aije (Electoral Judicial Investigation Action).

Among the measures foreseen as punishment for cases of this type are the revocation of registration or diploma and decree of ineligibility for eight years.

In a note, the State Secretariat for Communication of Alagoas stated that the action was "strictly personal and private, without any relationship with the structure or resources of the Government of Alagoas". Furthermore, the text claimed that the governor will comply with the recommendation issued this Tuesday.

"Governor Paulo Dantas clarifies that the transfers via Pix made during participation, as a guest, in the Mother's Day party promoted by the City of Rio Largo occurred on a strictly personal and private basis, without any relationship with the structure or resources of the Government of Alagoas.

The governor informs that he will comply with the recommendation issued by the Regional Electoral Attorney's Office, maintaining his stance of respect for legality, transparency and electoral standards", he declared.
