A Brazilian delegation was in China last week to participate in trade negotiations and Sial, one of the main food and beverage fairs in the world. The balance of the diplomatic trip was evaluated by CNN Agro columnist Lygia Pimentel, who highlighted the favorable moment for Brazilian beef in the Asian market.

According to Lygia Pimentel, the outcome of the trip is positive, especially because Brazilian beef remains competitive on the international scene. "We continue to have very competitive Brazilian beef, so it is easier to present our product", said the analyst, who also highlighted communication challenges to be overcome.

Expanding Asian market
The analyst highlighted that the mission was not restricted to China. Countries such as Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines were also mentioned as strategic destinations, as they show a tendency for accelerated growth in the coming years and decades.

"They are very populous countries, so they end up having an interesting profile of low added value, but with the possibility of increasing volume at an accelerated pace", explained Lygia Pimentel. For her, these markets will certainly become important customers in the not too distant future.

Giblets and by-products: cultural opportunity
Another highlight in the analysis was the Asian interest in meat offals and by-products, items that have low acceptance in the Brazilian domestic market. Lygia Pimentel explained that this consumption profile is directly linked to the economic history of the region.

"A region that had very slow human development [...] had a more depressed economy for many decades", said the analyst, adding that this generated the habit of consuming all types of protein available, including offal and by-products.

The analyst cited chicken feet as an emblematic example: China is among the largest importers of this product from Brazil, while Brazilian consumers are resistant to this type of food. In the case of beef offal, Lygia Pimentel reported that exports have increased since last year, when countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia, which previously only received offal, also began to import boned meat and carcasses.

"These customers increase their purchasing power and they want to access another type of product that is different from what they already have there, culturally speaking", concluded the analyst.
