Navy sergeant used PM husband's gun to kill businessman

Tayana Rangel Cardeal, a Brazilian Navy sergeant arrested in the act after the shooting death of a businessman at a 15th birthday party, on Sunday (24), in Campinho, north of Rio de Janeiro, allegedly used her military police officer husband's gun to carry out the shot that killed Davidson Vasconcellos de Matteo Silva, 37 years old.

The information is based on preliminary information from the case and reports from witnesses who were present at the event. According to records, Tayana's husband is a military police officer assigned to the 3rd BPM (Méier).

Davidson's death would have occurred after an argument broke out during the party. Witnesses point out that, amid the disagreement, Tayana went to her husband's car to get the gun.

The businessman leaves his wife and two daughters, who witnessed the scene. So far, no information about the wake and burial has been released.

The moments after death
Military police were called and isolated the area to carry out the investigation. The investigation was the responsibility of the Capital Homicide Police Station. The weapon used was seized and those involved were taken to the police station.

Tayana was arrested for homicide committed with a firearm. Her husband gave a statement and was released. In parallel with the criminal investigation conducted by the Civil Police, the Military Police informed that it will initiate internal procedures to clarify the circumstances of the case.

In a statement, the Brazilian Navy reported that it was aware of the incident and declared that it is following the case, collaborating with the bodies responsible for the investigation. The corporation also stated that it does not condone conduct that is incompatible with military values and reiterated its commitment to legality, discipline and ethical principles.

The incident was registered as an arrest warrant for simple homicide and is being processed at the Custody Hearing Center of the Capital District. The suspect's custody hearing was scheduled for this Tuesday (26), at 1:01 pm.

The case remains under investigation by the competent authorities and there is still no judicial conviction. The defense of the person being investigated may speak out throughout the process.
