The 2026 World Cup will apply new anti-wax rules, as well as changes to the use of VAR, approved by the IFAB (International Football Association Board), which governs world football laws.

In March, the entity published the new approved rules, which seek to minimize players' famous waxing and make the game more fluid, recovering precious minutes of ball rolling.

Some of them have already been used in the 2025 Club World Cup, such as the one regarding ball throw-ins by goalkeepers. If a goalkeeper held the ball for more than eight seconds in the competition, the referee would award a corner to the opposing team.

With the success of the application during the tournament held in the USA, FIFA decided to expand the rule, which will also be extended to throw-ins. Furthermore, the replacement time will be even shorter. If the judge notices an attempt to delay the restart of the game, he must blow the whistle and start a five-second count with an open hand.

New rules that come into force at the World Cup

- Substituted players must leave the field within 10 seconds, if they do not do so, the substitute will only be able to enter the first break after one minute;
- With the exception of situations in which the rule allows assistance on the field (goalkeeper, head collision, etc.), the player who requests assistance must remain off the field for one minute running from the restart of the game;
- When he deems that there is an attempt to delay the resumption of the game in touchlines and goal kicks, the referee will blow the whistle and will start a five-second count with an open hand; After this time, the throw-in will be reversed and the goal kick will turn into a corner for the opponent;
- The video referee will be able to review calls for a second yellow card
- The video referee will be able to review a corner clearly awarded incorrectly

The rules come into effect from the 2026 World Cup onwards and must be adopted in all other championships.

The topic regarding corners may or may not be adopted, at the discretion of each championship. It should be used as long as the review can be completed immediately and without delaying the restart of the match.

2026 World Cup
The 2026 World Cup takes place between June 11 and July 19 in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The edition will be the largest in history, with 48 selections for the first time.
