Brazil registered 293,842 reports of non-lethal violence against women in health services in 2024. Of the total, 64% of cases were registered within the family environment, according to data from the "Atlas of Violence 2026", a study by Ipea (Institute for Applied Economic Research) in partnership with the FBSP (Brazilian Public Security Forum), released this Tuesday morning (26).

When the focus is only on cases of aggression, around 79.9% (150,211) of the incidents took place within the victim's own residence. In the research, domestic violence is divided into: "multiple, neglect, physical violence, psychological violence, sexual violence, other and NI (not informed)".

"The data reinforces the idea that the residence, far from being a safe space, constitutes the main locus of risk for women [...] showing that violence tends to manifest itself in environments of intimate and continuous coexistence", points out the research.

Recurrence of violence
Another fact that draws attention in the survey is the continuity of attacks. Still in the context of domestic violence, 66.2% of women served by the health network in 2024 had already suffered violence of the same nature previously.

According to the study, sustaining the cycle involves control and isolation strategies on the part of the aggressor, which increases the victim's dependence and makes it difficult to break the bond.

"In this context, it is not uncommon for women to repeatedly visit health services after episodes of violence, without there being an effective interruption of the abusive dynamics", indicates the study.

Victim profile
Violence does not affect all women in the same way, and therefore, crosses racial and age markers. Black women are the most vulnerable. They represent 58.6% of victims of domestic violence in the health system and have a homicide rate 66.7% higher than that of non-black women.

The research also points to high rates of domestic violence in relation to two groups: girls aged 0 to 9 years (16.7% of victims), mostly affected by the "neglect" group of violence, and then young women aged 25 to 29 years (11%), where physical violence becomes the main manifestation.

"From the age of 15 and up to the age of 69, physical violence prevails as the most common manifestation of violence against women, often associated with intimate relationship contexts, and accompanied by a high proportion of multiple violence, indicating that different forms of aggression tend to occur simultaneously", concludes the survey.
