More than 300,000 young people have been murdered in Brazil over the last decade. According to the 2026 Violence Atlas, released this Tuesday (26) by Ipea (Institute for Applied Economic Research) in partnership with the FBSP (Brazilian Public Security Forum), between 2014 and 2024 the country recorded 301,825 homicides of people between 15 and 29 years old, equivalent to an average of 75 deaths per day.

The data shows that, despite the reduction observed in indicators of lethal violence in recent years, youth continue to occupy a central position among victims. In 2024, 19,801 young people would have their lives interrupted by homicides, with a rate of 42.2 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

According to the Atlas, young people represented 46.5% of all homicide victims registered in Brazil in 2024, which means that practically one in every two violent deaths in the country affected people between 15 and 29 years old.

If we consider the methodology of estimated homicides, which seeks to compensate for possible failures in identifying hidden violent deaths, the rate rises to 46.1 homicides per 100,000 young people.

Men account for almost all deaths
The profile of victims remains heavily concentrated among men. Of the total number of young people murdered in 2024, 18,545 were male, equivalent to the vast majority of cases recorded in the period.

In practice, this means that, of the 54 young people killed per day in 2024, 51 were men, according to the survey. The homicide rate among young men reached 78 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, almost double the general rate among youth.

National decline did not occur equally across the country
Although the national scenario indicates a reduction in lethal violence against young people compared to ten years ago, the behavior of the indicators was uneven between states.

Between 2014 and 2024, the Atlas points to significant reductions in youth homicide rates in the Federal District (-79.6%), Goiás (-67.8%) and São Paulo (-58%). On the other hand, some federation units followed the opposite trajectory, such as Amapá (+45.2%), Pernambuco (+7.5%) and Bahia (+6.4%).

In 2024, the state with the lowest youth homicide rate was São Paulo, with 10.7 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, while the highest was recorded in Bahia, with 114.7 per 100,000, a rate more than ten times higher than in São Paulo.

The Atlas highlights that violence against young people goes beyond the immediate loss of life and produces lasting social and economic impacts, as it reaches precisely a phase marked by educational training, professional insertion and consolidation of productive potential.

Atlas of Violence
The Atlas of Violence 2026 marks a decade of the partnership between Ipea (Institute of Applied Economic Research) and the FBSP (Brazilian Public Security Forum) in monitoring lethality in Brazil.

The study was prepared based on data from the Mortality Information System (SIM) and the Notifiable Diseases Information System (Sinan), from the Ministry of Health (MS).

Although official indices point to a historic drop in lethal violence, research shows that there has been a critical increase in the underreporting of homicides.
