Cave rescuers in Laos say they are close to trapped people

A rescue team working against time to save seven people trapped for days in a cave in Laos is getting closer to reaching them, the head of the operation said, after overcoming 15 meters of obstacles in a single day.

The seven people entered the cave in Xaisomboun province in central Laos on May 20, but were trapped by a landslide caused by heavy rain, according to a local rescue group and state news agency Lao Phattana News.

A Thai rescue team joined the operation on Sunday (24) and reported significant progress towards the entrance of the cave where the group is trapped.

"From this moment on, I believe our success is not far away," said Kengkard Bongkawong, team leader, in a social media post on Monday (25).

The team is working together with a local group, Laos Rescue Volunteer for People, who said the seven people entered the cave looking for gold. The country's disaster agency could not be reached for comment.

Images posted on the Lao Phattana News Facebook page show rescuers in helmets crawling through tight spaces under flashlight light, panting, and others walking slowly through chest-high muddy waters inside the cave.

The team includes a diver who participated in a 17-day rescue of a flooded cave in the mountains of Thailand in 2018, which attracted worldwide attention when experts from around the world, including U.S. military personnel and members of the Thai Navy (SEALs), went to Chiang Rai province to free a youth soccer team called the "Wild Boars."

Kengkard, who leads a volunteer rescue and disaster response team in northeastern Thailand, said water pumping will continue day and night after the team breaks through sand and gravel to approach an underwater well that they believe will lead them to the trapped men.

He stated that a survey of the area above the cave found four shafts that could potentially connect to the cave system and provide an additional route for rescue.

"We estimate that we have less than 20 meters to go until we reach the main target area," he declared.
