The European Union rejected a request made by the Brazilian government to adopt a transition period in new rules on the use of antimicrobials in animal production, according to CNN. The Brazilian request was mainly aimed at the beef chain and provided for an adaptation period to prove the health history of animals exported to the European bloc.

According to sources involved in the negotiations, the Europeans have already responded that they will not accept any type of transition mechanism related to the issue. The assessment within the government is that the main obstacle is precisely in cattle farming, due to the complexity of the Brazilian production chain.

Today, the animal can pass through different properties throughout its life before slaughter, which makes the complete traceability required by European legislation difficult. The Brazilian proposal envisaged that slaughterhouses would initially prove the absence of antimicrobials only in the months prior to slaughter, while a comprehensive control system would be structured in the coming years - a window compatible with the cattle's final confinement period.

According to government interlocutors, poultry, eggs and honey are considered more manageable by technical teams, due to the shorter production cycle and greater control of the chain. In the case of cattle, the need is for a system recognized and validated by Europe to guarantee the required health information. Some slaughterhouses are able to offer this expanded traceability, but the volume of animals with this level of control is small and concentrated.

European legislation on antimicrobials was approved in 2018 and regulated in 2023. The new requirements come into force in September this year for exporting countries.

Recently, the European Union removed Brazil from the list of countries authorized to export certain products of animal origin produced using antimicrobials not permitted by the bloc's rules.

There was an expectation that the documents required by the EU would be sent this Monday (25), but the government's technical area is still preparing the documents and should send them by the end of the week.
