North Korea launched several missiles, including at least one short-range ballistic missile towards the Yellow Sea, this Tuesday (26), the South Korean army reported.

The missiles were launched off the west coast at around 1pm (local time) from Chongju in North Pyongan Province, North Korea, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

This is North Korea's first known missile launch since April 19, when the country tested several short-range ballistic missiles that were equipped with cluster bombs.

South Korea declared on Tuesday that it intends to launch its first nuclear-powered submarine by the mid-2030s, as part of a new program aimed at neutralizing nuclear and missile threats launched by North Korean submarines, said Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back.

The submarine will use low-enriched uranium fuel and will be developed and built in South Korea, Ahn said, presenting South Korea's basic plan for securing nuclear-powered submarines.

Ahn said the program would take advantage of South Korea's nuclear, naval and defense industries, while maintaining Seoul's commitment not to acquire or develop nuclear weapons.

South Korea will work closely with the United States during the process of obtaining low-enriched uranium fuel to ensure non-proliferation and will also work with the International Atomic Energy Agency, Ahn said.

Nuclear propulsion would give new submarines the ability to remain submerged much longer and ensure greater mobility than existing South Korean submarines, the government said.

North Korea testing and firing
In early April, Pyongyang said it had tested a new cluster bomb warhead on a ballistic missile and an electromagnetic weapon, in a move that analysts said was part of efforts to demonstrate North Korea's ability to wage modern warfare.

In March, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un stated that his country's status as a nuclear-weapon state was irreversible and that expanding a "self-defensive nuclear deterrent" was essential to national security.

Despite UN sanctions against its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs since 2006, North Korea has stepped up efforts in recent years to strengthen its arsenal under Kim Jong-un, drawing condemnation from South Korea, Japan and the United States.
