Behavioral economics: what makes you spend even though you want to save?
Behavioral economics explains a habit that we see a lot around: deciding to save and, shortly afterwards, paying in installments for a purchase. The behavior is called "present bias", when the brain gives more value to the immediate benefit than to greater gains in the future.
In practice, many people prefer to receive R$100 today rather than wait a month to earn R$120. But, when the decision is left for the future, waiting becomes easier. According to experts, the problem is not the value, but the distance of time.
The mechanism helps explain decisions such as entering the card rotation, paying in unnecessary installments for purchases and postponing important choices. Immediate pleasure usually weighs more than the future cost.
Every week, g1 Explica simplifies the economy, the financial market and financial education, showing how all of this affects your pocket.
