SP is the state with the lowest deforestation in the Atlantic Forest, according to Inpe

According to data from the Atlantic Forest Atlas 2024-2025, the State of São Paulo recorded a 29% drop in deforestation in the Atlantic Forest between 2023 and 2025, the lowest rate since 2018-2019.

The atlas organized by the SOS Mata Atlântica Foundation and the National Institute for Space Research) showed that the deforested area increased from 49 to 35 hectares during the analysis period. Since 2019, such a low level has not been recorded, when 43 hectares were recorded.

The state appears in the atlas among the states with the lowest rate of deforestation in the country. Of the four states analyzed in the southeast region, São Paulo also has the lowest rate.

Minas Gerais recorded 3,092 hectares deforested; Rio de Janeiro, 82 hectares; Espírito Santo, 56 hectares; and São Paulo, 35 hectares.

The secretary of Semil (Secretariat for the Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics of the State of São Paulo), Natália Resende, reports that she sees the result as an advance in environmental policies in the State. "The Atlantic Forest plays a fundamental role in the State's water security, biodiversity and climate resilience. The reduction in deforestation in São Paulo demonstrates that integrated public policies, combined with monitoring and environmental restoration, produce concrete results", he states.

In addition, the Atlas also points out that SP currently has 2.34 million hectares of preserved Atlantic Forest, equivalent to 13.7% of the native vegetation within the area of application of the Atlantic Forest Law.

In total, 69% of São Paulo's territory falls within the area covered by federal legislation to protect the biome.

Semil also states that, in addition to the reduction in deforestation, the State of São Paulo has also advanced in environmental restoration actions. Since 2023, the state has more than 41 thousand hectares of areas focused on restoration, the equivalent of 55 thousand football fields.

The survey carried out by INPE and SOS Mata Atlântica shows that, covering the country, there was a total reduction of 40% in deforestation, which went from 14,366 hectares in the previous period to 8,668 hectares in the current report.

Currently, only 24% of the country's original Atlantic Forest remains. Of these, around 12.4% are forests monitored by the Atlas.

The result of the annual survey was the lowest ever recorded in the entire history of the Atlas, which has been collecting this data since 1989, marking for the first time an annual deforestation of less than 10 thousand hectares in mature forest areas of the Atlantic Forest.

In four decades of research, the Atlas monitors 17 states covered by the Atlantic Forest Law. In the current edition, 99.6% of the 130.9 million hectares in the area of application of environmental legislation were analyzed.
