MP-SP sues feed manufacturer after death of hundreds of horses and asks for R$10 million in compensation

Nine horses die after consuming contaminated feed in Guarulhos, in Greater SP
The Public Ministry of São Paulo filed a public civil action against the animal nutrition factory Nutratta and the company's owner after the death of hundreds of horses and the illness of other animals in different states of the country. The action was filed last Friday (22) by the Consumer Prosecutor's Office.
According to the process, the company allegedly used soy residues contaminated with pyrrolizidine alkaloids in the manufacture of feed intended for horses, cattle, pigs and poultry.
The MP asks the Court:
The blocking of the defendants' assets; Livestock (Map);
The recall of contaminated products;
The compensation of harmed consumers;
And the payment of R$ 10 million for collective moral damages.
According to the investigations, laboratory reports and necropsies indicated the presence of toxic substances in concentrations up to 2,600 times higher than the limit considered safe for horses.
G1 contacted Nutratta, but did not receive a response until the last update of this report.
The data gathered by Mapa shows 238 confirmed deaths of equines in different states of the country. In a stud farm in Indaiatuba, in the interior of São Paulo, 29 deaths were recorded and around 120 animals fell ill.
Another case of great impact occurred in Atalaia, in Alagoas, where 79 animals died after consuming the company's feed, according to the Public Ministry.
There were also reports of deaths and illness of animals on properties in Guarulhos, Campinas, Itu, Porto Feliz, Volta Redonda and Jaboticatubas.
The public civil action also states that the contamination may have gone beyond the damage caused to animals and reached the human food chain. This is because, according to the MP, the same production line was used to manufacture beef feed without effective mechanisms for controlling cross-contamination.
Auditors from the Ministry of Agriculture warned of the risk of transmission of toxic alkaloids through the milk, meat and liver of animals fed with contaminated products. The MP maintains that the company failed to comply with health and food safety standards by using contaminated raw materials in the production of feed.

At least nine horses raised on the Dia de Sol farm, in the rural area of Guarulhos, Greater São Paulo, died in 2025 after consuming Nutratta feed.
"A horse spent the night running in circles in a stall and a mare was wanting biting the wall. It was like that with all the animals, it's like it was dementia", said trader and breeder Marcos Barbosa.
At the time, Mapa ordered the recall of all the company's products intended for equids produced from November 2024 onwards and began an investigation to investigate the deaths, in addition to banning their sale.
Horse owner in Gaurulhos suspended the use of the feed, but around 30 animals had already consumed the food. product.

Barbosa said that a company representative visited the site after reports of the deaths in May last year. According to him, the employee had assumed responsibility for the factory and informed that the company would take action. At the time, 110 bags of food were confiscated, said the trader.

The first cases of poisoning appeared on April 21, 2025, in Rio de Janeiro, and the first death was recorded on the 23rd of the same month in São Paulo. The horses were apparently healthy and without evident clinical changes. However, suddenly, they began to show acute neurological signs that quickly led to death.
When the toxin reaches the nervous system, the animals lose control of their movements, keep their heads down and become injured.
According to veterinarian Marcella Batista, there is no cure for poisoning. She claims she lost two animals in a span of less than 30 days. The horses lived in Cabreúva, in the interior of São Paulo, and had been fed with the feed for around two years.
"There is only supportive treatment with serum and anti-toxic drugs. Poisoning causes changes in liver enzymes and, eventually, neurological symptoms, which can lead to euthanasia due to animal suffering", she said. Therefore, an examination of liver enzymes in animals that consumed contaminated feed is recommended to begin preventive treatment.
