Centennial church is consumed by fire in Rio Grande do Sul

A huge fire hit the Flores da Cunha Parish Church, built 112 years ago, in Serra Gaúcha on Monday afternoon (25). There were no injuries.

According to the Rio Grande do Sul Military Fire Department, two trucks, 13 firefighters and 11 firefighters were needed to respond to the incident. The place was empty when it caught fire.

According to firefighters, the church was undergoing maintenance and the fire started on the roof of the building, probably where work was being done. "The entire church was consumed by flames," reported a spokesperson.

According to the commander of the company responsible for the municipality of Flores da Cunha, Captain Sanhudo, the flames have been controlled and firefighters continue their work to completely reduce the chance of fire reignition.

The corporation also advised people not to stay around the site, due to the smoke. The causes of the fire will be investigated by the responsible bodies.

In a statement, the City of Flores da Cunha expressed solidarity with the Nossa Senhora de Lourdes Parish in the face of the fire. "What we can say at this moment is that we will re-establish ourselves and rebuild together. Flores da Cunha is a strong community, united by faith and its history", highlighted the city's mayor, Marcio Rech.

The Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora de Lourdes was built in 1914 and is one of the oldest churches in the state in the Gothic style.

According to the note, Corpus Christi's programming will be evaluated jointly between the City Hall and the Parish. New information will be officially communicated soon.

The Igreja Matriz de Flores da Cunha posted a statement on social media, stating that all masses and activities are temporarily cancelled.
