Chevrolet Onix gains Eco version powered only by ethanol

Chevrolet announced the expansion of the Onix and Onix Plus line in the Brazilian market with the launch of the Eco version. The main difference of the new variant, based on the Turbo AT configuration, is the adoption of a 1.0 turbo engine calibrated to run exclusively on ethanol, abandoning the traditional flex system.

The change in strategy aims to fit the compacts into the tax benefits of the federal government's Mover Program, starting with the 2027 models.

Pricing strategy and the Mover Program
With the new calibration focused on vegetable fuel, the Onix Eco becomes part of the rules of the "Sustainable Car" project of the Mover Program. This guarantees the model an automatic reduction of 0.5% in the Tax on Industrialized Products (IPI), calculated on the base rate of 6.3%. Previously, turbo versions with automatic transmission did not receive the benefit because they did not meet the minimum required rates.

This tax exemption allowed competitive pricing within the category. The Onix Eco (hatch) comes with a suggested price of R$103,190, while the Onix Plus Eco sedan is priced at R$106,990. In practice, the values bring the automatic turbo options closer to the entry-level variants with an aspirated engine and manual transmission:

Engine and equipment list
The Onix Eco's mechanical package uses a 1.0 three-cylinder turbo engine, but adjusted exclusively for ethanol. The engine delivers 115 hp of power at 5,500 rpm and 16.8 kgfm of torque between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm, working in conjunction with a six-speed automatic transmission.

In 2019, GM introduced the second generation of the vehicle, which marked the debut of turbo engines in the range and raised the segment's safety standard by bringing six airbags as standard. The arrival of the Eco ethanol version represents an unprecedented movement in the model's trajectory, adapting its powertrain to focus on the biofuel matrix and meet the new energy efficiency requirements of the national market.
