Actress Isis Valverde, 39, reported that she was hospitalized three times in 2026 due to an autoimmune condition. She used social media to talk about celiac disease, an autoimmune condition triggered by the consumption of gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.
"This part is traumatic, I discovered it when I was 19 years old, and my celiac disease is very aggressive to the point where, if I come into contact with an oil that fried gluten and I eat it, I will feel very ill. At the beginning of the year, when I was working, I was hospitalized three times", she said.

Celiac disease is an intolerance to gluten, acquired hereditarily. The condition causes characteristic changes in the lining of the small intestine, resulting in poor absorption of nutrients. As a result, after ingesting gluten, the intestinal lining becomes inflamed, causing symptoms such as diarrhea, weight loss and, in more extreme cases, malnutrition.
Some people only develop symptoms of the disease in adulthood. Most of them are digestive symptoms, accompanied by weakness and loss of appetite. If left untreated, the disease can lead to severe malnutrition, due to poor absorption of nutrients by the intestinal walls.
According to data from the MSD Manual, approximately 7% of people with celiac disease develop painful, itchy skin rashes and small blisters - a condition called dermatitis herpetiformis.

The disease is more serious in children, with additional symptoms
In childhood, symptoms can begin in early childhood. Symptoms range from mild stomach discomfort to painful abdominal distension and light-colored, bulky stools. Children diagnosed with celiac disease may experience slower growth and appear pale.
Nutritional deficiencies resulting from malabsorption in celiac disease can cause additional symptoms. Severe anemia, vitamin B12 malabsorption and calcium deficiency are some of the consequences of the disease. Girls with celiac disease may not have menstrual periods in adulthood due to low production of hormones such as estrogen.
Condition is still underreported in Brazil
Celiac disease is a hereditary disorder that can affect up to 1.4% of the world's population. However, according to Fenacelbra (National Federation of Celiac Associations in Brazil), around 80% of people in Brazil remain undiagnosed.
The country still lacks more comprehensive studies on the prevalence of the disease, which reinforces the underreporting of cases. Many patients live for years with symptoms treated in isolation, without celiac disease being considered as the underlying cause.
The diagnosis is made through specific laboratory tests, under the supervision of a specialist. Measuring the number of specific antibodies produced when a person with celiac disease consumes gluten is an accurate test used to confirm the diagnosis.
In some cases, it is necessary to perform an intestinal biopsy: the doctor takes a sample of tissue from the lining of the person's small intestine and examines it under a microscope. Blood tests can also indicate the presence of genes that increase the likelihood of developing the disease, helping people monitor symptoms and increasing the chances of an early diagnosis.
