University restaurant is closed after 80 students fall ill in PR

The university restaurant at UFTPR (Federal Technological University of Paraná) was closed last Friday (22), after around 80 students fell ill after consuming meat pancakes served there.

The food was offered at lunch and dinner on Thursday (21), at the Francisco Beltrão campus, in the Southwest of Paraná.

Following the students' reports, Health Surveillance teams found ground meat with an unpleasant appearance and odor. The suspicion is that the product was used in the pancakes served to students.

The restaurant is managed by an outsourced company hired by the university in the bidding process. According to the Health Surveillance, the establishment had previously been closed due to irregularities related to goods and consumption standards.

Also according to the agency, the problem identified was operationalization, that is, the lack of hygiene practices, training or employee turnover.

Surveillance also reported that, after the inspection, the company contributed to the new standards and the establishment was reopened this Monday morning (25). Despite the reopening, the agency said it will continue to monitor the case.

In a statement, UTFPR regretted what happened and informed that it awaits official reports to adopt the necessary measures.

CNN Brasil also tried to contact the company responsible for the university restaurant and is awaiting feedback. The space remains open.

"On the morning of this Friday, 22, UTFPR's Francisco Beltrão Campus became aware of the precautionary closure carried out by the Health Surveillance of the University Restaurant (RU) at the headquarters. The action was taken following reports of people who showed symptoms of food poisoning after eating on site. Meals and restaurant management are carried out by a contracted company, winner of the bidding process, which was notified by the Surveillance Health. The management of the UTFPR Francisco Beltrão Campus is now awaiting the official reports from the Health Surveillance to adopt the appropriate administrative measures.
