Swiss Stan Wawrinka made his last appearance at Roland Garros this Monday (25), after being defeated 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 by Dutchman Jesper de Jong. As he left the court, he received a long round of applause and a standing ovation that reflected the public's enduring affection for the 2015 champion.
At 41, Wawrinka, who achieved his first Grand Slam by winning the 2014 Australian Open before also lifting the Roland Garros and US Open trophies, is expected to end his historic career this season.
The veteran thrilled fans by reaching the third round in Melbourne at the start of the year, but was unable to prolong his farewell in Paris. Lucky loser De Jong dominated the first set and remained calm to confirm the victory after a brief reaction from the Swiss in the middle of the match.

The fans at Simonne Mathieu Court sang Wawrinka's name and cheered with each Swiss winner. The crowd went wild when he leveled the game at one set, but De Jong quickly regained control of the match.
Current number 106 in the world, the Dutchman only entered the main draw after Frenchman Arthur Fils withdrew due to injury. He won the third set after an even contest at the start and closed the match in a tight fourth set.
"Today is not about me," De Jong said in a quick on-court interview.
"A funny story about Stan is that he stood up to my coach when I was a ball boy. I don't mean to say he's old. Today is all about Stan, especially the way he fought."
After a tribute video played on the big screen, an emotional Wawrinka thanked his fans for making his last performance in Paris special.
"It was three hours of emotion, three hours of battle thanks to you, thanks to the support you gave me all these years", he said.
"I wanted to keep playing, go as far as possible until I was 41 to experience emotions like those of today. I was lucky to feel them for a long time. You never want to say goodbye when you love something deeply.
"I knew it was the end; I gave everything for this sport and I know it is the right choice. I would love to return here before you, but unfortunately this was my last match at Roland Garros."
A second tribute was shown soon after, with messages from Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Gael Monfils celebrating the Swiss' career.
