Court will decide whether sisters considered "serial killers" will go to jury in SP

The São Paulo Court begins, this Monday (25), the first hearing to judge whether sisters Ana Paula Veloso Fernandes and Roberta Cristina Veloso Fernandes will go to the popular jury for the death of four people by poisoning between January and May 2025.

In addition to them, Michelle Paiva da Silva, suspected of paying her sisters to kill her own father, will also be heard. According to the TJSP (São Paulo Court of Justice), the trial begins at 1:20 pm, at the Guarulhos courthouse, and is expected to last five days.

19 witnesses will be heard, in addition to the defendants who will be questioned. The case is under judicial secrecy and, therefore, no further information has been released.

At this stage of the process, the Court collects testimonies from the parties involved, appointed lawyers and witnesses and, subsequently, decides whether or not the defendants will be subjected to trial by a popular jury.

Deaths from poisoning
The São Paulo court classified Ana Paula Veloso Fernandes as a "true serial killer", after the woman was reported for multiple qualified homicides.

The suspect, arrested for involvement in the death of Neil Corrêa da Silva, is accused of killing four people by poisoning between January and May 2025 in Guarulhos (SP), São Paulo and Duque de Caxias (RJ). The crimes, committed for a base reason, were committed with the use of poison, making it difficult for the victims to defend themselves.

In testimony, Ana Paula confessed to having technical knowledge about the use of the product, controlling time and dosage to simulate natural causes of death.

The four victims identified in the investigation are Marcelo Hari Fonseca, Maria Aparecida Rodrigues, Neil Corrêa da Silva and Hayder Mhazres.

- Marcelo Hari Fonseca: Ana Paula lived at the back of Marcelo's property. She confessed to having murdered him after disagreements and alleged threats. After the crime, she claimed to have had a romantic relationship with him to try to stay in the house.
- Maria Aparecida Rodrigues: She had a romantic relationship with the person being investigated. Ana Paula used Maria's phone line, registered hours before her death, in an attempt to incriminate third parties, including a former lover and his wife.
- Hayder Mhazres: The suspect met him through a dating app. The planning of the death occurred after Hayder rejected a supposed pregnancy that Ana Paula simulated.
- Neil Corrêa da Silva: He was killed with the promise of a reward.

The investigated person carried out the crime at the behest of the victim's daughter, Michele Paiva da Silva.

Sister's participation
Documents obtained by CNN Brasil reveal that Ana Paula Veloso Fernandes, identified as a serial killer, had, together with her sister Roberta Cristina Veloso Fernandes, simulated a pregnancy to obtain a financial advantage from Hayder Mhazres.

With Hayder's refusal, the two would have planned the death of the man, who was of Tunisian origin.

According to the investigation, Ana Paula had met Hayder through a dating app and subsequently started a relationship with him.

After starting contact with Hayder, Ana and Roberta spread the narrative of an alleged pregnancy to force a possible marriage or financial assistance from the victim.

She also sent photographs pretending to be pregnant to the man's family and messages in Arabic with offensive and threatening content, in search of advantages.

Investigation
It was found that Ana Paula's statements exhibit several contradictions - such as attempts to attribute the cause of death exclusively to "drugs", to minimize her movement in the building and to disassociate Roberta -, which are not sustainable in relation to the evidence obtained by the police, such as telematic data and statements.

In view of the elements highlighted, the Civil Police indicated that Hayder's death was the result of the crime of qualified homicide, with a base motive and the use of poison.

Ana Paula was accused of, in total, four homicides committed in the same way: by poisoning. She has been imprisoned since July 2025.
