Juventus and Milan, two of the biggest giants in Serie A, failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League this Sunday (24). It will be the first time in almost 35 years that neither of them will compete in the main European competition, deepening an identity crisis in Italian football, already under pressure due to recent poor results.

In their place, Como secured a historic place in the tournament after just two seasons in the elite. Less than ten years ago, the club played in the amateur divisions. Since the Champions Cup was renamed the Champions League in 1992-93, at least Juventus or Milan have always been present.

The giants' absence represents the culmination of a historic season for Como, which finished fourth, but also the lowest point of a troubled campaign for Italy's top clubs. All this happens after the Italian team missed out on a third consecutive World Cup.

The season also marked the first time since 1986-87 that Italian clubs were left out of the semi-finals of the three main European competitions.

Big changes at Milan
For Milan, seven-time European champions and last winners in 2007, profound changes are coming. Club owner Gerry Cardinale faces intense pressure after angry fans displayed banners reading "Go home: shame" outside the manager's hotel and at the San Siro stadium.

The 2-1 defeat to Cagliari, which confirmed fifth place and absence from the Champions League for the second year in a row, should trigger an immediate overhaul of the board, according to the Italian press.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri is also under heavy pressure, as are several players in the main squad.

Former Milan player and coach Fabio Capello harshly criticized the team:

"I saw a team without strength, without will, without ideas. A revolution? Yes, but only if there are ideas behind it, otherwise it doesn't make sense."

Reconstruction at Juventus
Meanwhile, Juventus, European champions for the last time in 1996, finished only in sixth place after a 2-2 draw against rivals Torino.

Despite the frustration, coach Luciano Spalletti must remain in office, with the support of the board to lead a reconstruction of the squad within stricter financial limits.

"We will need to be even better," said Spalletti, acknowledging the impact of the loss of Champions League revenue.

The coach also indicated that Juventus will look for reinforcements in the next transfer window to increase the group's personality.

Como's historic rise
In contrast to the crisis in Milan and Turin, Como is experiencing a historic moment. Under the command of former world champion Cesc Fabregas, the club secured a place in the Champions League alongside Inter Milan, Napoli and Roma.

"When I arrived four years ago as a player, we changed clothes in a bar. Today we are in the Champions League," said Fàbregas.

Como's success also reflects a current trend in Italian football: the strong foreign presence in the squads. The highlight of the campaign was Argentine Nico Paz, who scored 12 goals and provided seven assists, arousing the interest of Real Madrid, who could activate the 21-year-old midfielder's buy-back clause.
