Flamengo confirms Jorginho's fracture; club criticizes refereeing

Midfielder Jorginho had a fracture in the big toe of his right foot confirmed by Flamengo this Monday (25). The player underwent imaging tests after the 3-0 defeat to Palmeiras, last Saturday, and will be absent from the team in the match against Cusco, in the Libertadores, this Tuesday (26).

According to the Rio club, the injury occurred after two fouls suffered by the midfielder in the first half of the match played at Maracanã. In one of them, in the first seconds of the game, Jorginho received a challenge from Andreas Pereira. Despite the red and black complaints, the referee did not issue a yellow card.

Even though he was injured, the midfielder remained on the field for almost the entire match and was only replaced in the 41st minute of the second half, when he was replaced by Saúl Ñíguez.

In an official note released on social media, Flamengo took the opportunity to criticize Brazilian refereeing and linked Jorginho's case to a sequence of injuries suffered by the squad throughout the season. According to the club, this was the sixth fracture recorded in red and black players in less than six months.

The statement also highlights that, in the plays that resulted in the injuries, no opposing athlete was sent off. Flamengo also compared the team's disciplinary numbers in the Brazilian Championship, claiming to be the team with the most expulsions in the competition, even though it is only in 12th place in the ranking of fouls committed.

In addition to becoming a certain casualty against Cusco, Jorginho could also increase the red-and-black coach's list of absences for the duel against Coritiba, next Saturday (30), in the Brasileirão. If he is not fit to play, the midfielder will be the tenth player absent from the team for the match.

"The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that, after an image examination carried out on the morning of this Monday (25), midfielder Jorginho was confirmed to have a fracture in the big toe of his right foot. The injury is the result of two violent fouls suffered in the first half of Flamengo x Palmeiras, in which the opposing player was not even warned with a yellow card.

It is worth noting that this is the sixth fracture of a Flamengo player in less than six months of the season. In none of the plays that caused these injuries, the opposing athlete was sent off. In some cases, like last Saturday, not even a yellow card was issued.

In contrast to this scenario, Flamengo is the team with the most ball rolling in the country, only the 12th team in number of fouls committed, but it is the club with the most players sent off in the Brasileirão so far: six, five of which received a direct red card. None of these expulsions resulted in the opposing athlete leaving the field or injury.

Jorginho is out of the match against Cusco, valid for CONMEBOL Libertadores, this Tuesday (26). If he is unable to play next Saturday (30), it will be Flamengo's tenth confirmed absence for the match against Coritiba, in Brasileirão Betano 2026."
