Iran's new supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, suffered "superficial injuries" to his face, head and legs during the Feb. 28 airstrike that killed his father, the Iranian Health Ministry said, trying to minimize the impact on his health.

Khamenei's limbs were not amputated, his injuries were not serious and did not require special treatment, Iranian Health Ministry spokesman Hossein Kermanpour said, cited by state news agency ILNA.

"Other than superficial injuries to the face, head and legs - which did not result in amputations or specific complications - nothing significant happened and, from my perspective as a doctor, these injuries were not considered serious and did not require special treatment except for one or two spots," said Hossein Kermanpour, according to ILNA.

Kermanpour also said that Khamenei was released from hospital in the early hours of the following day.

The New York Times reported last month that Khamenei's face and lips had suffered severe burns and that one of his legs had undergone surgery three times, leaving the ayatollah awaiting a prosthetic.

Since the start of the war, Iranian officials have insisted that Khamenei is in good health and is overseeing negotiations with the United States to end the conflict, blaming Iran's enemies for spreading rumors about his health.
