Chinese appetite for beef grew in 2026, with a boost given by the safeguard measures implemented from January 2026 and the rush by exporters to fill quotas without 55% taxes.
Between January and April this year, the Asian country purchased 1.1 million tons of beef, from all suppliers. Increase of 25.75% compared to the same period last year.
More than half left Brazil. From January to April, the country sent 612.87 thousand tons of meat to China. Jump of 53.62% compared to the first four months of 2025.

Radar quotas
The point that deserves attention is the full fulfillment of the quotas set by the Chinese safeguard regime:
Australia has already sent 144.42 thousand tons; 70.45% of its quota of 205 thousand tons.
Brazil appears close behind with 55.41% of the quota, of 1.1 million tons, filled.
And Argentina, even with the decline in the annual comparison, has already used 34.58% of its quota of 511 thousand tons.
Projections indicate that Brazil will reach the quota in mid-July, adding the cargo in transit and the time it takes to reach China, around 45 days. Despite requests to use unfilled quotas from other countries, this measure is unlikely to be accepted by the Chinese government.
China has adopted safeguards measures for the purchase of beef since January 1, 2026. A way of trying to protect Chinese livestock farmers. Owner of the third largest cattle herd in the world, behind Brazil and the United States, Chinese production is insufficient to supply the domestic market of 1.4 billion inhabitants. The rules are expected to last up to three years.
