Iran said on Monday (25) that, despite the progress made, Washington and Tehran are still not close to reaching an agreement to end the war in the Middle East, after a weekend of contradictory messages from the two countries.
The war, triggered by attacks by the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic on February 28, led to the practical closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian bombings against other countries in the region and an increase in energy prices.
Oil prices fell sharply following a wave of optimism about a possible agreement, after the head of US diplomacy, Marco Rubio, suggested that a deal could be imminent, but the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry responded that this "is something that no one can sustain". China, Xi Jinping, in Beijing.
American and Iranian forces have maintained a ceasefire since April 8, while, at the diplomatic level, negotiations continue to find a way out of the conflict. Despite the interruption of bombings, Iran maintains a blockade of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and the United States maintains a blockade of ports in the Islamic Republic.
"We thought that maybe we would have news last night (Sunday, 24th), or maybe today (Monday, 25th), but I wouldn't attach much importance to it," said American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, in New Delhi (India), when mentioning the possible agreement.
Rubio stated that the United States has "a very solid proposal" on the table to open the Strait of Hormuz, a proposal "that is not only very reasonable, but is also the right one for the world."
In Tehran, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baqaei, was more blunt in his statements.
"It is true that we have reached a conclusion on most of the issues under discussion", declared the spokesperson at his weekly press conference. "But stating that the signing of an agreement is imminent is something that no one can sustain," he added."

Collection of 'fees' in Hormuz
Baqaei stated that Iran will continue to control maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz with charging fees, but insisted that this does not mean that Tehran wants to "charge tolls".
"The services provided, that is, navigation services, as well as the measures necessary to protect the environment of the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, require the collection of certain fees", declared Baqaei.
On Sunday, the American president reported on his Truth Social network that he asked his negotiators "not to be hasty (...) because time is on our side."

Furthermore, Donald Trump stated that the blockade of Iranian ports "will remain in full force" until a definitive agreement with Tehran is signed.
In turn, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Sunday that he and Trump agreed that any final agreement with Iran must include the "requirement" to "dismantle Iran's nuclear program and remove all enriched uranium from Iranian territory."
'Promoting peace'
The authorities Iranian officials have emphasized that, although Washington has long demanded that the country end uranium enrichment activities, negotiations on Tehran's nuclear program will only take place at another stage, after an initial agreement.
Oil prices remain high compared to pre-war prices, but this Monday a climate of relative optimism caused a drop of almost 5%.
A barrel of North Sea Brent and a barrel of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) were trading for less than 100 dollars in the early morning.
On the diplomatic level, Donald Trump spoke by telephone on Saturday with leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan and Bahrain, as well as representatives from Turkey and Pakistan, to discuss the agreement being negotiated.
This Monday, the Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Islamabad Army Commander Asim Munir, who visited Tehran on Saturday, met with Chinese leaders in Beijing, including President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.
According to Pakistani state channel PTV, Sharif said in Beijing that "the world is facing a critical moment."
"Things are moving in the right direction. I would like to thank China for its support in promoting peace," he added.
