The speaker of Iran's Parliament, Ebrahim Rezaei, declared this Monday (25) that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, is "befailing", calling him a "failure".

"Don't believe the failed president's bluff, time is against the Americans", wrote Rezaei in a post on the social network

This Monday's statement comes after new discussions about a possible agreement to end the war over the weekend.

Trump said on Saturday (23) that he would meet with his main advisors to analyze the most recent proposal sent by Tehran to Washington and that he could decide by Sunday (24) to resume military actions against the country.

The president also stated that the outcome could lead to a "good" agreement or result in the US deciding to "blow them to hell."

Advance in negotiations
US and Iranian officials indicated they may be closer to reaching a preliminary agreement to end the war, after mediators from Qatar and Pakistan participated in talks in Tehran.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes and that the US remains focused on ensuring that Iran does not have a nuclear weapon.

"Even as I speak to you now, there is work being done," Rubio said on Saturday (23) during a visit to India. "There's a chance that, whether it's later today, tomorrow or in a few days, we'll have something to announce."

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday (25) that a certain degree of understanding had been reached with the United States on several issues, but an agreement was not imminent.

"There is no guarantee that the United States will fulfill its commitments," Baghaei declared at a press conference in Tehran, the country's capital.

According to him, the Iranian nuclear program is not part of the discussions at this stage and reiterated Iran's demand that the war end on all fronts, including Lebanon.

Iran seeks to delay negotiations on the details of its nuclear program until a formal end to the war is declared.

Baghaei said Tehran has witnessed constant changes in the Trump administration's positions.

"Within a few hours, you are faced with completely different and, in many cases, contradictory positions," he said, adding that this "creates problems for any negotiation process."

Points of divergence
The two sides remain at odds over several complex issues, including Iran's nuclear ambitions, Israel's war in Lebanon against the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, and Tehran's demands for the lifting of sanctions and the release of tens of billions of dollars in Iranian oil revenues frozen in foreign banks.

A senior Trump administration official outlined what he considered the latest contours of the issues under negotiation.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the official said Iran had agreed "in principle" to open the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the lifting of the US naval blockade and to dispose of Tehran's highly enriched uranium.

The US understood that Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, endorsed the general outline of the agreement, he added.

The official refuted suggestions that Iran would not have agreed to part with its stockpile of enriched uranium.

"The question is how," said the official.

A second senior government official said on Sunday that the proposed framework would give negotiators 60 days to reach a final agreement.

Iranian sources told Reuters that in future steps, "workable formulas" could be found to resolve the dispute over its stockpile of highly enriched uranium, including dilution of the material under the supervision of the UN nuclear agency.
